how much horsepower does your truck have

its engine time for the truck and debating on what engine to drop in. looking around 350-450 hp. Would love to do a twin turbo 350 with 600whp, but not really practical. FUN but not practical.

So thoughts are a 305 with 350hp
350 or 355 with 400hp

I like power. How does 350+ feel in a pickup? Loose in the rear?

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

Most guys would really be suprised if they actually dyno'd their truck....

with out a 4 link and a set of big meats you wont be able to hook 300 hp. and when it rains you might as well stay at the house. 400 hp would be scary and anything over that is OVERKILL. that is unless your drag racing... on the track!

hot rod magazine dyno'd the same car on 5 different chassis dynos a couple mths ago
they had 5 completely different numbers that varied as much as 85 hp.
on top of that there was as much as 50 hp difference between pulls on the same dyno.

truk had a '74 302 in it that was donated to my son's 68 elco. it was factory rated at 140 hp, that was at the crank
i roll my eyes when i hear anyone claim to have more than 1 hp/cubic inch in a pre Lx motor
unless your building a kabwe build with big old meats on back our trucks will only spin the tires anyway

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

1974 truck 4 bolt 350 bored to 355 ci. Has a cam, aluminum intake, Qjet, ram horn manifolds. Stock it is listed as 160hp and 250tq, so maybe 200 with the cam and improved intake?? Previous 283 w/ 292 cam and 4 bbl did fine, I am hoping this motor will have a little more low end torque.

I disagree. Turbo engines are usually very docile when not in the loud pedal.

No.

LOL. What?

I drove 150 miles in the pouring rain on PowerTour a couple years ago, on bald drag radials, with ~500 rwhp. No drama.

400 hp is barely adequate, IMO. But I'm a HP junky.

Yes, a 275/60/15 will fit. My wheels were only 8 inches wide, but they fit great and hooked amazing. Prior to the Mickeys, I was on a BFG Radial T/A. From a 70 mph roll, I could stab it and go sideways when the turbo lit, The DRs calmed that down a lot.
[EDIT: Sorry, just noticed this was in the 47-59 section...hit "new posts" and assumed it was in the "racing and performance" section...if you can fit the tires, use them]

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

Nothing is overkill if its what you want. People build cars for different reasons some cruise, some show, some just want drivers, and some just like to show off.lol I have friends with massive horse power in their trucks but I'm a cruiser that just likes a little get up and go. For me 350-400 will be fine, but others like to feel motor in the chest.lol It depends on what you want. I like low end torque more than hp anyway to me its just more fun. But thats just me.

Mine is a 350 crate 330 horses. That is more than enough for me.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

Still running leaf in the rear. No 4link. Saw an episode on Hot Rod TV or Gearz with a pickup that had a beef engine and leafs and was sloppy as hell. Converted over to coilover and 4link and the truck hooked. No really sure I want to go 4link right now.
Basically looking for enough power to get the truck up and moving and when you gas it, it goes.
Planning on running 17x9 or 17x10 in the rear, Truck has a blazer rear end (the beefier one).
I am thinking that a 350-400 should be a great place to stay. Ample power and not over kill.
KABWE- I am one of those guys that loves the motor in the chest. Used to have a Turbo VW and loved cranking the boost, eventually got bored of low boost setting so always kept it on high. High was 22psi 480whp. Car weigh 2291lbs. Fun and Scary all at once.

That was Gearz. He had a '53 Dodge with a 528 Hemi crate motor. He had before and after clips of the truck launching - didn't seem to be too much of an improvement after the 4 link. Better yes, but still had a bunch of wheel hop...

Here's a guy that goes to the local cruise in and he has power to spare. He starts this thing up and you can feel the engine all up in your chest.

I can't tell you much about that front end other than its a fiberglass frontend. I've spoken to the guy before and found him to be a butthead and I'm allergic to buttheads.lol So once I see a person is a a**hole I walk away and leave it at that.

I am running a LQ9 6.0 which is rated at 345hp , it is a good daily driver but will still run mid 14's,I am also running a 4l80e overdrive with 3.50 rear which also makes a big difference. You can see it run on youtube just look up 56chevy pickup lq9. At 75mph it runs 2400 rpm,and yes it is a hand full on wet or snow packed streets
