How can i make my inline 6 faster...

Hey i gotta 250 or a 292..not sure yet...its all stock..and a 2 speed powerglide in a 67 c10..I wanna make it faster..but i dont wanna do a total rebuild..and i dont have alot of money..im looking at cams..manifold intakes etc..Could someone recommend something to do...thanks

HAHA, well my neighbors have a 350 big block...they might sell..but im only 15..when i turn 16 ill need insurance and a 6cyl will make it cheaper..and cheaper on gas..plus i know inline 6's can be made fast...but thanks for the honesty

2nd that! I will say I have seen some hopped inlines that really run........but the big kicker is that it costs a lot of green backs to go there. It would be much cheaper to drop a a smallblock v8 in the truck........crazyL

That 350 would be a small block. Your inline 6 can be made to be faster. They do make performance parts for it. I do remeber some years back that a 1969 Inline 6 Camaro was tearing up the National Drag Race circuit back in 69-70.

i reccomend to save ur money and get a 350 built it will be cheaper and easier in the long run.i agree just leave it alone make it reliable. and btw ur insurance isnt gonna go up by putting a 350 in a 6 cylinder truck b/c the vin will come up as a 6 cylinder truck not a v8 truck. so make it reliable and save ur money for a potent smallblock

Get a copy of Leo Santucci's Chevrolet Inline Six Cylinder Power Manual. $14 at Amazon. It's fun to be different, the only problem is money. It is cheaper to build a hot 350, but when you see a 250 turning 12's, it sends chills up your spine. Biggest problem is air flow, especially if you have the integral head. Installing a cam is not the first step. To get the benefits of the cam you will need a better intake, carb and exhaust. Cheapest and quickest upgrade is an HEI. Check your local junkyards, they're one size fits all for the six. Cost is around $50 plus a new set of wires and plugs.

If your 67 is stock, it should have the 250 engine.
For more help you can go to www.stovebolt.com or www.inliners.org . The inliners website has a casting number section which will help you verify your engine.

NUTS!

Anyone would have to be nuts, to hop up a six. Here's mine...I'm nuts. It cost three times more to build than a V8, it's fussy and will only out run "little" V8s...but it looks & sounds cool! Guys either love it or hate it...sound familiar? And if that isn't painful enough, I put a 700R4 behind it.

Check out Langdons stovebolt page at www.stoveboltengineco.com They have pictures and prices in their online catalog. Just for bolt on HP you could get a set of headers, a 4 bbl intake and carb, an HEI ignition and throw on a K&N filter kit. That will give it some more boost.
I was in the same boat as you, trying to decide on the built up inline or a nive 350. The 350 won by a landslide and mainly because of 2 things, the cost of the rebuild, and the performance. It is costing me in total about $1000 to rebuild my 350, that includes the $350 I paid for the engine . Where as the inline was going to cost me 3 times that amount. PLus the 350 has more parts readily available for performance upgrades. But as others have said. I would love to have a screamin six someday. Good luck bud

BAD HEADERS

Those headers are PaceSetter and I don't have anything good to say about them. It took six weeks to get them built, they don't fit well, the flanges are too thin, they hit the intake and have to be dented, and finally, the ceramacoat finish is expensive and does not last. I guess you could say I don't like them much!

Pickmup has the right idea. I built my 292 up for what i wanted. I keep it cause it was a totally orginal truck and i still have all the stuff to go back to stock. However, it now runs with a 350 and i got over 20 mpg my last tank. However, it is still cold blooded as hell, i dont drive it much, but whenever i do i let it warm up. I mean it doesn't miss or anything, it just likes to be a little warm, and with a 4 barrel and 5 inch open air filter i can understand. It will take a LOT more green to build it. Thats what i have incountered at least.

Also pickmup, you said that the ceramic coating on yours isn't holding up well. Thats the only thing that i didnt do on mine. I have really good headers, but they wanted another 2 months to coat them. Are yours starting to flake off or what? I have thought about taking mine off and getting them coated because i have other ways to get around. Would you suggest against the coating?

It is flaking off in a lot of little spots. I think this was a cheap/poor job and not prepped well. They said it was warrantied for one year, but who wants to tear their truck back apart and send off the headers? It should have been right the first time, for all of the extra $$$ they charged. I just don't know if there is a better process or not. Headers SUCK! I may try a set of cast headers next time.
