Bellhouse Holes
I want to convert my 72 auto to a stick, I'm looking at a bellhouse from another 72 but noticed the the top 2 holes are threaded but the bottom 2 holes are smooth. how do you bolt the tranny in?

Re: Bellhouse Holes
the top thread into the bell housing and the bottom just insert through bell housing and tranny and secure with a nut. I used all grade 8 hardware.

Re: Bellhouse Holes
The lower two tabs on the tranny should be threaded. At least mine are...

Re: Bellhouse Holes
Yup, on the SM465 trannies of this era, the bottom two bolts go through from the inside of the bell housing and thread into the tranny. Later 465s did not have the holes threaded in the bottom, so you would have to use nuts to mate that combination.

Re: Bellhouse Holes
I used the bell housing mounts. You'll need a pre 67 bell housing for the smaller bearing retainer. went through this myself check out thread. i posted a WTB on the board and was able to score the right bell for my 3spd man tranny.

Re: Bellhouse Holes
all in all, wouldn't it just be easier to use an aluminum bellhousing and a rear tranny mount?

Re: Bellhouse Holes
I run the auto crossmember under my Richmond, & have used that crossmember under saginaw& Muncie 4spd trans in the past. Yes, I think that is the easier way,& it has not caused any trouble.....I DO prefer the cast bell made for the truck however. IMHO, you run the truck bell,& all the truck specific clutch linkage, ect & it all fits without mods to any of the linkage There are several ways you can "skin the same dern cat"......so you have to use the method that works bestest for you have fun with the project, crazyAL
