Free tow hooks

My 72 K20 came factory with tow hooks (in glove box) but weren't on the truck when I purchased it......well years have gone by not willing to pay the going rate for factory tow hooks I had just given up.

Well today it happened ....I was at the junk yard looking for a couple things for my '01 Silverado and in the back corner was this 71 custom 20. typical junkyard truck bed full of parts, this one was actually sitting on the ground as it had no wheels, no tailgate or grill but was pretty complete. I looked for tach/AC /throttle contol etc but just looked like another abandoned truck. it took me a while to realize it was a 4x4. The cab was full of garbage suit case etc and I didn't notice the high hump and transfer case shifter, but as I was walking away I noticed the front axle and convinced myself to go back and look for tow hooks. THERE THEY WERE both of them wow I couldn't believe it. I brought them up font and the guy laughed, he said wow I should charge you buy the pound...I smiled still wondering what I would have to pay. I asked what he wanted and he said....ready for this....he said aww just put a donation in the can...I said WHAT??? as I was looking at this coffee can on the counter that had some scribbling on it about christain kids or something. He repeated himself and said aww just put a donation in the can. I was speechless.... I actually through a twenty in there but still feel like I had him at gunpoint.

Re: Free tow hooks

Great story and luck! Good instincts on checking it out a little better. I have one of those trucks too. '71 Chevy K20. Tow hooks on spid but somebody got em long before I got the truck. I just can't see myself spending more for tow hooks than I paid for the truck!

Here you go. Summer of 2008 when the scrap prices got so high this truck was headed for the crusher but I couldn't let that happen.

You are welcome, sir. I forgot to add that the truck is a '71 by the title, so obviously it at least had a grille change at some time, so that spid is a '71.

they are like earings for your girl....

this is one item that isn't produced in the aftermarket so the supply and demand makes them worth $200-$400 depending on style. They are 60-68, 69-72 (like these) and 72 only extreme bend ($$$).

These were options for 4x4 trucks and they are not that plentiful. It's like my factory GM Tissue Box ... Its just cool to have one.

They weren't just put on 4x4's. I have found 2 sets on c30 2wd's. They also aren't really that rare, but we like them on 4x4's. It's like completing the look to 4x4's like putting big wheels on 2wds. The factory tow hooks just have that "mean" look to them. They were put on quite a few trucks, but a lot of trucks have been crushed over the years so the number of them always go down. I wouldn't dare put them as rare as a tissue dispenser or dealer 8 track player. Trevor

Anybody put these on a C10 2wd? Maybe for getting towed around the dragstrip?

I would just buy a $10 set from tractor supply or northerntool.com for that use.

Re: Free tow hooks

I picked up a set at the swap meet and the holes don't line up exatly with the holes in my K5 frame. I think they are about 1/2" off. Could they be from Dodge or Ford? They look right and have a casting number, I think starting with a 3 like most GM stuff. Did they only come on 3/4 ton trucks? Is that the prob? Thanks for any help.
