are you happy with your 700r4 or 2004r?????

I'm doing a poll to see how many people that did a 700r4 or 2004r swap and are happy with the performance and reliability of their transmission.

please comment on where you got your transmission from and what kind of engine and gears you have. and how much (if any) of a mileage increase you saw.

I also want to know about you folks with Gear Vendors and Manual Valvebody 4L80E's

please post your opinion.

Re: are you happy with your 700r4 or 2004r?????

I have one in a 91 and am happy with it. I know it isn't quite what you were asking. When I bought the truck 6 years ago it had eaten 3 transmissions. I bought mine from some outfit in Salt Lake that specializes in trannies and had them build it up a little bit. Granted I only put 20k on this one but it has lasted longer than the other 3 that took a crap. SorryI can't remember who the company was though or any of the specs.

Re: are you happy with your 700r4 or 2004r?????

I have done several 700/200 swaps, and my customers, and I love them. I currently have a 700 in my 72 2wd Blazer, and am very happy. I have a couple of 200 cores at my shop, and if possible be selective what 200 core you get. The valve body calibrations on some 200 will make it a bit tough to get nice firm crisp shifts. I do not have it in front of me but seems like if the 200's have a 3 letter calibration code on the tag attached to the right side near the rear of the trans they seem to be able to be firmed up easier. The BRF code was used in turbo Buicks, and are near impossible to find. I have a CZF from a Monte Carlo that will probably find it's way into my 69. The spacing in gear ratio's is more even on the 200's .

Yea me too!
If you don't like your 700R4, then by ALL MEANS, please let ME have it and as soon as I do the Swap, you can have my Turbo 350.

Why is that?

In my opinion, the #1 killer of these transmissions is the rebuilder or the installer. When rebuilt and installed properly, they're a great tranmission for street use. A lot of people don't understand how important the TV cable set up is.

350/700R/3.73. Been running a 700R since 2003. 12mpg city and 16 highway with 65mph coasting along at about 2000rpm. It has a low 1st gear for fun launches too. I'm one happy camper.

I've gotta agree with you there, I hate mine, but I got ahold of a bad rebuilder

My 700 is great, it's from Jasper. Not even a hint of a leak from anywhere after 5 years and it shifts great. I have the BowtieOverdrives TVMADEEZ kit and their lockup kit. 70mph at 2500rpm.

Re: are you happy with your 700r4 or 2004r?????

I've got a 700r4 and am happy with it. I bought it from a guy who rebuilt it,about 12 months later it took a crap on me. call the guy who had rebuilt it and he had recently passed away. He had been rebuilding them for along time and had built many of good ones. I think mine was one of the last he built. I had a friend that has been trans specialist for about 30 years and took it to him to get rebuilt. he showed me what went wrong and its been doing fine every since. It shifts good and strong and almost everytime it hits second I get this funny barking noise from the tires. I'm running a 350/4Barrel with 3:73 posi trac rear and 285/70/15 bfg's. rpms are right at 2300 at 65-70 mph and i get about 15-16mpg.

Re: are you happy with your 700r4 or 2004r?????

Got mine off craigslist for $130. With the driveline rebuild and the TV cable kit, the entire cost of the swap from turbo 350 to the 700 cost around $400. I've got about 27k miles on it and I'm happy so far.

Re: are you happy with your 700r4 or 2004r?????

The only problem I have with my 200r is it stays in lock up too long and lugs the motor. I've taken it to a couple places but I'm not satisfied. Was thinking if they could make a switch (I have the brake switch) so I can keep it out of lock up around town.

This is "common." The 200 and 700's like to shift into OD and lock up at 40-45mph under light acceleration. When hooked up to a factory motor/computer in the vehicle it was meant to be in, it's OK. Even my Z71 shifts into OD at 45mph. In a non stock application, that's not always a good thing. What I did was put a Lokar floor shift in my truck. It easily "toggles" between OD and 3rd by pushing up or back on the shifter. Long story short, when I drive under 50mph I drop the truck into 3rd and leave it until I hit 50 or so. Below 50, I usually just leave the truck in 3rd.

Re: are you happy with your 700r4 or 2004r?????

I guess this question will never have a 100% consensus, I have a 2004R and 7004R sitting on the floor in my garage. I have a turbo 350 in my truck with 4.10 gears 2800 at 55mph. I just don't know which way to go.

Re: are you happy with your 700r4 or 2004r?????

I have had at least three trucks with 700r4 and I have to agree that in most cases is the builder who screws them up.....Even though in my 71 I went with a fully built th350 and have no regrets as gas mileage was not in my priorities....

OK, Now you guys are pissing me off!

I've got a Turbo 350 in my 72 GMC with a newer 350 from a 94 GMC (Carburated,Serpentine Belt).
Now I've asked this question MANY times before, but this Thread is actually providing me with some direction/answers!
I CAN tell you this, I'm NOT interested in Gas Mileage.

The (2) things I want are:
1) Reduced RPM's at Cruising Speed 55-70 MPH.

2) When I'm going over 55 MPH and I "punch" the Gas,
I want my Turbo 350 to Kick Down/Down Shift/Passing Gear
(whatever anyone wants to call it).

I thought I was S.O.L. as far as achieving =the two points referenced above, with my Turbo 350.
Currently running 3:73 Gears with 15" Tires.
So that is why I was looking into the 200R/7004R Question/swap.

Future plans (6 Months-Year) include:
Going to 20" in Back/18" in Front.
Will definitely be going with a 383 Stroker, (Minimum 400HP)

So with those things in the Mix, I've got an Expert High Performance Tranny Builder, and I believe the 700R4/22R are a "Stronger Built" Tranny, then a Turbo 350....yes???

If that's true, I would GO that route, but it would still be nice to achieve Numbers 1 & 2 (from above) while I have my Stock Turbo 350 in there.

Anyone???????????????????????

That is not going to happen with 15 inch tires you may gain some with 20's

I want my Turbo 350 to Kick Down/Down Shift/Passing Gear

I do have have 18's and 20's in the rear I do have 373's I also have a motor with right around 420 to the wheels and if I stomp on my truck at 50 mph it does shift down and you have to hang on for life....My tranny is very far from stock it was fully built to take the horsepower

Have a 700R4 in my 72 C10. The kid I bought it from had the TV cable hooked up but I thought the trans was shifting way too quick, and sure enough it wasnt adjusted right. It is now I only put mine into OD on the highway. Yes I am happy with it so far.
