Cutting Holes in the Stock Bumper - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I want to cut holes for fog lights in my stock bumper. I have come to the conclusion that this is probably not a great idea because of what the holes may do to the chrome around the edges of the cuts.

BUT...

My bumper is already kind of effed up, and it's not show quality at all, so I'm gonna experiment. I want to cut little circles and then french in some yellow HID projector bulbs and run them as fog lights.

My question is, how should I prep the edges of the cut? I'm going to use a hole saw, and then bracket them in from behind somehow, but my concerns are the chrome, the edges, and how it will look from the front with the round domes peeking out of the bumper. I don't really know what else to do.

Tape the edge of the cut then pain the edge of the hole with silver...I would use a simple L bracket with a stainless bolt though the face of the bumper

the only thing i could add to Hot's post is to maybe use a dremel to smooth out the cut edges some prior to paint..

LMC sells a bumper that already has fog lights in it like you describe.

if he can do it in his garage with things he already has then i don't see why he should go out and pay LMC plenty of cash.

go buy a can of drilling oil and grab a buddy to squirt it on your bumper when your cutting, i've found that to help out a ton.

To get it started properly locate the center of where you want your hole and center punch the spot. Then drill a small pilot hole. Put a couple of layers of duct tape down and start drilling from the front side till you get about half way through. Flip the bumper and finish drilling from the back side.
This will prevent the chrome from peeling when you "break through" with the hole saw.

Use a knockout driver. I used one on my rear bumper for my trailer light plug, and altough you're supposedly not supposed to use a knockout driver on that kind of steel, it cut fine.

Then you get a clean, perfect hole.
