New locks?
Anyone have any experience with the repro lock sets out there? I want to replace the doors and ignition, but there seem to be a wide variety of prices out there for things that all look the same. I'm not looking to spend a fortune, because I'm eventually going to shave them, but I don't want something that will fall apart before I get the razor out...

Re: New locks?
I got mine from.....classic something in like kansas, sorry I forgot the name. Seem to be doing good (although I dont use them much) so far so good. I like ECE (well, my parts seem to be getting here slow) but the rest of the orders were good. Theyre a lil higher than others but great customer service. Heard you can also get locks from your parts houses in town (oriellys autozone etc)

Re: New locks?
Yep. For the doors and ignition. They sell chrome or painted black, I think.

Re: New locks?
Don't feel silly. No such thing as a silly question. Wouldn't you feel more silly if you ordered some online....and paid more, plus shipping....and then found out that you can buy them at your local parts store. I was gonna order some online when I was in the market too.

Re: New locks?
I used to say all the time the only stupid question is the one unasked...
Then I started teaching college... I was actually hoping to put an order in tonight, but now I'll wait until I check the local shops tomorrow when I get the rest of the parts I need. Thanks All! Trip |

Re: New locks?
I rebuild them. You just take the little tumblers to the GM dealer and get new ones to match. They cost pennies. They also have the face pieces and bezels too. You can do a set for 5 bucks or so and have genuine GM parts not Chinese stuff.

Re: New locks?
So if I pull the locks and take the guts to the Chevy dealer around the block, I can get new ones? Is it an in stock thing, or do I have to order them?

Re: New locks?
You remove the locks and pry the face plates off of them. Then remove the tumblers and springs. It is important that you keep them in order. Each tumbler as a number on it. The guy at the dealership will match them with the new ones. My dealer keeps them in stock in little boxes.
You can also buy the stainless bezel and little key hole door from them at the same time.

Re: New locks?
Mine came out of my 1971 Monte Carlo shortly before it was headed to the scrap yard. My truck had a set but I didn't have the key. The Monte I had a key and the locks. All I had to do was swap the Monte lock linkage catcher thingy for the truck one. If memory serves, it was just held on by a little E clip.
