69 chevy bumper still wont line up to 72 gmc

I made a post a week or so ago, and the replies i got were to buy 69 brackets but that did not work. I am trying to install a smooth 1969 chevy bumper on my 1972 2wd gmc, with the bumper pushed against the frame it still sticks 2 or 3 inches from the grill and leaves a gap. I bought different brackets and they still wont work, i am trying to install it with the 2 top brackets that rest above the frame rail and you run a bolt through.

Any ideas??? It just seems my frame needs to sit back about an inch, this bumper combo not compatible?

I noticed this on my 67 gmc with gmc bumper, the bolts i was using on the top center were to long and were hitting the grill.

does the center of the bumper mount flush to the front frame horns? If so, that's as far back as you can go w/o cutting them.

Which bumper did you buy. I was thinking of buying one for my 68 GMC. I also have a 69 Chevy and I always thought the bumpers and brackets were the same.

Also, post some pics if you can. It will help to see what you're dealing with.

Does not sit flush because of the bolts that the center brackets have.

Hey Baged72,

Yes, they are different between the years and you can see that even LMC carries different codes for them.. I agree with the others though, we really need to see what you have and the measurements on your current bolts as well.. JUst set the bumper down on the ground inline with the normal position it would go or have a buddy lift it while you take an over head photo and then we can see.. If I remember correctly, there were inside and outside brackets but I could be wrong... some bumpers have a slight curviture and we need to see how much yours is curving before we can give any advice.. it's either that or go to the hardware store and buy some different length bolts and try that... Here is a link to the different bumpers and years...

Re: 69 chevy bumper still wont line up to 72 gmc

I have a 72 not a 69, i bought the smooth front chrome bumper that goes with the 69 chevy. I do not have the side brackets i only have the top brackets that sit in the center of the bumper, my problem is that the frame hits my bracket bolts so it does not sit snug against my front grill. I dont know how to take a picture when there is no possible way to mount the bumper so i cant show the gap.
