ok so i have a 1980 c-10...... correct me if im wrong... where there computers back than in these trucks? and if so what are they used for engine purposes? or what not.... if someone could send me the wiring diagram for my 1980 c-10 that would be nice or the answer to my question would help alot.

Re: found a computer in my glove box

I don't think there are computers in these trucks, if so I would think maybe in an 87 b/c I think they had fuel injection. I have some wiring diagrams in my shop but I won't be in there until the morning and I will look at what I have. Too cold and windy (lazy) to walk to the shop tonight.HAHA

Re: found a computer in my glove box

Some of these trucks had a turbo 350 that was computer controlled. Called a th350c. Mine had one and has an computer behind the glove box. Also possibly for the computer controlled ignition some of these trucks had. Called ESC.

Re: found a computer in my glove box

That's the Electronic Spark Control (ESC). Had one in my 83. All it controlled was, well, the spark.

You can enjoy Mike Ervin's instructions on removal here, if it's shot.

Re: found a computer in my glove box

Can we have a little more info? Like the drive train you have in it,the truck born on date? Does it have an O2 sensor?

I was told mine was a 79, but the paperwork shows 1980. I haven't found a computer yet, Guess I better look closer.

I know the California models 82-86 (possibly 80-86)were feed back carburators. Thats why they are so cheep out here because they can be a real pain to get to pass smog. The feed back carbs wear out and are plenty pricey to get replaced.

Like I said I took it out of mine when I put in my 454 and it works fine. The only thing is that I didn't remove all the wires and my check engine light stayed on.

Re: found a computer in my glove box

I'm sorry. But sounds like you bought a hot (stolen) truck. Why in the world would you switch a VIN in a truck? May be only a switched cab but?????

I take it back to the guy in a big hurry.

Yikes! Stop and search the web right there. Check the SC (I think) DMV to make sure you can title it before dropping money in it. Google your state, dmv and title for example.

If you don't have a clear title, why spend money on it? So says an old fool from Ohio where we transfer titles cuz the state makes us...

Re: found a computer in my glove box

i'd double check the vin, would not want to be pulled over and find out it's stolen....changing the cab is one thing but changing the vin without papers, not legal up here, when re vinning you must use rivits

Take the truck back, like yesterday, and get your money back.

Re: found a computer in my glove box

Since about 82-83 all the GM pickup trucks do have computers for emission control purposes, as said. The computer harness was simple, using splice connectors to connect to the distributor and the carburetor.

All trucks with 700R4s had computers also.

Imagine standing on the side of the road, trying to explain to a LEO why your VIN tag is screwed on.......

Re: found a computer in my glove box

Keep in mind that if a LEO wants to, he can impound the truck until the courts are satisfied that the intent of changing the physical tag was not fraud.

From North Carolina statutes:

§ 20‑109. Altering or changing engine or other numbers.

(a) It shall be unlawful and constitute a felony for:

(1) Any person to willfully deface, destroy, remove, cover, or alter the manufacturer's serial number, transmission number, or engine number; or

(2) Any vehicle owner to knowingly permit the defacing, removal, destroying, covering, or alteration of the serial number, transmission number, or engine number; or

(3) Any person except a licensed vehicle manufacturer as authorized by law to place or stamp any serial number, transmission number, or engine number upon a vehicle, other than one assigned thereto by the Division; or

(4) Any vehicle owner to knowingly permit the placing or stamping of any serial number or motor number upon a motor vehicle, except such numbers as assigned thereto by the Division.

A violation of this subsection shall be punishable as a Class I felony.

(b) It shall be unlawful and constitute a felony for:

(1) Any person, with intent to conceal or misrepresent the true identity of the vehicle, to deface, destroy, remove, cover, alter, or use any serial or motor number assigned to a vehicle by the Division; or

(2) Any vehicle owner, with intent to conceal or misrepresent the true identity of the vehicle, to permit the defacing, destruction, removal, covering, alteration, or use of a serial or motor number assigned to a vehicle by the Division; or

(3) Any vehicle owner, with the intent to conceal or misrepresent the true identity of a vehicle, to permit the defacing, destruction, removal, covering, alteration, use, gift, or sale of any manufacturer's serial number, serial number plate, or any part or parts of a vehicle containing the serial number or portions of the serial number.

A violation of this subsection shall be punishable as a Class I felony. (1937, c. 407, s. 73; 1943, c. 726; 1953, c. 216; 1965, c. 621, s. 3; 1967, c. 449; 1973, c. 1089; 1975, c. 716, s. 5; 1979, c. 760, s. 5; 1979, 2nd Sess., c. 1316, s. 47; 1981, c. 179, s. 14; 1987, c. 512; 1993, c. 539, s. 1255; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 24, s. 14(c).)

If your not sure I would contact the DMV before you dump money it or get falsely accused of possible stolen or improperly altered vehicle. Figure that out then we can help you figure out the computer issue.
Good luck.

I refered to my sometimes trusty haynes manual and guess what I found. A computer in my truck, learn new things everyday. The ecm but looks like it is not as confusing as the newer models.
