Ordering new front end repair parts OEM - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi, I am in the process of a complete front end rebuild as I know it. I've purchased some parts already those being 1 lower & upper control arm shaft and 1 upper and 2 lower Ball joints and 1 Shock.

Through price comparison between Auto Zone and O'reillys I've come up with these items that I need.

1 Balljoint upper 16.99
1 Pair Coil springs = 74.99
1 Control arm upper = 29.99
1 Control arm lower = 28.99
1 Front shock = 23.99
2 Tie rod end inners = 20.00
2 Tie rod end outers = 20.00
2 Wheel bearings = 15.00
2 Brake hoses = 21.00

I am unsure if I need to replace the Idler arm and Pitman arm. How does this all look to you? And do you see anything else I may need. I'm trying to just repair it to stock specs as I am not interested in putting in high performance parts or upgrades as I'm trying to keep it original. Thanks!

Cheap prices can be deceiving. When it comes to front end parts I would go with Moog components. Those prices look to be in store brands, witch will be chinese imports. Not near as high quality as Moog. JMO.. WES

i was told even moog is made in china...?

WES does know his trucks and where most of the parts are being made...

I used "store brand" front end parts from Star Auto. They are called Partsmaster. They are made in USA, no complaints here. I also used the same stuff on my daily driver. Four years later, still going strong.

I used to put them on daily in shops where I worked. Lay a Moog next to a cheaper part and you can see the difference with the naked eye. Moog parts are heavier. They call them problem "solver parts" because they are actually better than OEM stuff.

In the early 90s, the GM dealer I worked for would go buy Moog idler arms through the aftermarket rather than replace another GM part. Some trucks would get three GM idler arms under 36k mile warranty. They figured it was cheaper to eat the parts cost than to make the customer mad at recurring repairs on the same item.

TRW parts are just as good as MOOG, if you can find them. Most likely they are actually the same exact part. Much cheaper though.

I try to stay with Moog as well. Just read the box for country of origin, things have been changing by the minute when it comes to aftermarket parts lately.
I have been looking at Kanter for a while but haven't bought anything yet. They sell complete kits for reasonable prices. Any one have any experience with them?

This was my experience with Partsmaster. I had the guy bring out those and the Moog brand. They were identical.

All front suspension parts must meet ANSI stds to be sold here in America.
They have a std for every part Mfg.. We sell Moog, AC Delco,and about 5 0r six others and will have them made for special situations. Some mfg's exceed the standards. all must meet them. As far as them being made in a foreign country while I don't like it but nothing we can do about it. All my relatives since the 30's grew up in the car part and auto mfg business in Ohio and Michigan.

My Mom worked on the assembly line at White Motors. One had 45 years with Thompson Products (later TRW). I would not say the lesser expensive ones were junk. If you use the truck as a truck like it was meant to be, use the Moogs. The others work fine for most daily driving. The problem Solver name is just a marketing deal. Remember a lot of "OEM" parts were made by Tier I suppliers and still are, not by the car companies.

Scott the partsmaster stuff is just like the MOOG stuff, reboxed. I worked for Autovalue Parts house after college and that was the house brand we carried. It is good stuff, I used it on my bb truck. Since I don't do parts any more I used carquest stuff on the 4x4 and it is TRW. We will see how it does.
