Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
I know, sounds cheezy, but... My wife is on board with me finishing up the '72 Burb and making it her DD. However, it currently has dual 2.5" exhaust with Dynomax Mufflers. It is way too loud for her (and me on the hiway). Maybe I'm getting old . I did a search and had a hard time coming up with much for Big Blocks. We aren't dead, and like a little sound, but don't want loud obnoxious, can't get the baby asleep in the car seat sound either. Not looking for completely quiet stock though. Anyone have any good knowledge or advice? Maybe a sound clip or two? All the ones I find on you tube and the web are the really loud built up Big Blocks. Remember a Burb tends to resonate a little, even with the sound deadener and carpet. Thanks in advance!
Shawn

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
What kind of Dynomax? I had dynomax super turbos on a 5 litre mustang and they were so quiet you could hardly tell it was a V8.

I used the same as you and they were way too quet. I think they only sound good with headers and I dont use them. My buddy has them on his with headers and they are completely different sounding.

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
Believe it or not but Im running Midas stock ones. We use the truck for business and drive it all over the country. I really didnt want quiet but my wife did. I am so glad I did. On the inside it is as quiet as a new truck. Way quieter then my 06 Ford diesel. Nice on the long drives. On the outside my 3 sons say it sounds great, they love the sound. It is way to quiet for me but if it was loud, that would have gotten real old after a couple of hundred miles. I have generic turbo's on a small block and my kids say it sound like a boat. The reason I went with Midas was because if I had a muffler problem it would be covered anywhere in the country. Good Luck.

I agree 100% I run Dynomax Super Turbo's, 3" mandrel bent exhaust with an x-pipe. Exceptionally quiet, and seems to make a bunch of power! My .02

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
About the only way you can get the 'right sound' will be to listen to others stuff and find out what they have. Something mellow to me, is my neighbors worst nightmare.

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
Very very good point. Thats how I selected the Spintechs. I heard them on a BB 396 and knew they were the ones for me.

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
generic parts store turbo mufflers with a very short glasspac in line with it should quiet it down for a pretty reasonable price
or just use what you have and add a 14'glasspac aftyer the mufler they're cheap about 25each

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
I am running 2 mufflers off a 4.3l s10 sound good to me. If you want to add some more rumble open the tail pipes up to 3" for the last 3 feet.

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
I have a set of flowmaster bb mufflers on my stock 402 and it is pretty quiet, they do not sound like regular flows that is for sure, but they take up quiet a bit of room.

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
DynoMax Hemi Turbos. They have a nice tone and are exceptionally quiet, LONG case. And affordable at about $55 each.

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
Is there such thing as a quiet 3in muffler?
I have 2 tiny 2 1/2in mufflers right after the headers merging to a single 3 chamber (longer version) 3in flowmaster that dumps right before the rear axle as it's too low to really go over the rear axle. I understand this may explain a lot of the noise too. |

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
Thanks for all the help so far guys! 70cst, that is exactly why I love this sight, and always will. Believe it or not, I checked the numbers and it has Dynomax Super Turbos 17734 with 2 1/2" offset inlets and outlets. They really are tucked nicely up there, but they are just really loud on the freeway. Of course I do drive about 70 or so with the 3 speed auto and pretty stout 3/4 ton rear gears if I'm not mistaken (not sure of the ratio though).
I had the Spintechs on my '91 SWB Reg cab S10 with 96 Corvette LT1 with 6 speed tranny in it when I was younger. I LOVED the way it sounded. Nice and mellow at idle and cruising, but nice and crisp when throttle was punched. I think the problem is mainly the noise inside the cab is so loud. Even with sound deadener (Raam Mat) on top, bottom, and sides and carpet its loud. We live in the city and my driveway runs up the side of the house. There is only about 10 feet to my neighbors bedroom windows. She and her daughter have never complained, but I know it must be annoying when I have to get up on a Sat or Sun to go to work at 5:00 A.M. and the truck is blasting at high idle to warm up. When the hurricane was here a couple of years ago and I was idling through the neighborhood right after my neighbors said they knew it was me just by the rumble of the Burb coming down the street. Like I said, we are not trying to be old fogeys, but I gotta get the sound level under control, or my wife won't use it as a Daily Driver. What if I ran a cheap glasspack inline before the mufflers, would that act as a resonator and tone them down a little? Has anyone ever used Borlas? I know they are pretty expensive, but they evidently have a pretty tame sound. What about the Spintech RV? Thanks for the advice and opinions so far! I really do appreciate them. Shawn

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
Sorry Cdowns, Just read what you wrote again. So the glasspacks would help. I hate to spend money unless I need to. What exactly do they do to help after the mufflers?

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
jorgensensc ... Spintech has all flavor of sounds. They do have a series of mufflers that have the deep mellow sound but not noticable at highway speeds. I would recommend that you call them. Thats what I did before I settled on mine...even though I sort of knew what I wanted. They were very helpful in discussing the types of mufflers that they had. You have been given lots of great ideas. Good Luck

theyd absorb sound // was pretty common on luxury cars like caddy and lincolns to have two mufflers in series back in the day of the bigblock//i figure the glasspoacks wont add much restriction but quiet things a bit//we used to do it on our streetracers back when i was young so as to not advertise another thing that might quiet it down is to just move the muffler further bach tword the rear of the truck, that might cut the harmonics down and quiet it down on the hiway

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
i was looking for a muffler that wasnt too loud, but didnt loose the "muscle car" feel.
i just put these on mine. they are similar to spintechs as far as construction, but they are smaller, quieter, and have a completely different sound. there is no resonation in the cab at any speed. it never gets obnoxious. its more of a sound you feel. i can try to get you a sound clip. summits had the stainless ones on sale for awhile now. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-55752 |

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
The 70 series Flowmasters have a very low tone to them. They are designed for BB engines and SUV's. They're not "stock quiet" but they're not loud either. They still have a deep throaty rumble. I've only heard about 2 vehicles with these on them.
I also had a set of 50 series Delta Flow Flowmasters on my old 86. It was a nice mellow tone at idle and cruise, and would still talk at WOT.

Re: Need a Quiet exhaust for 402.
Magnaflow!
I am running 2.5" duals and 22" mufflers on mine and at idle it is too quiet but it sounds good when the throttle is opened up. I should have went with some 18" mufflers...oh well. But if Magnaflows interest you I normally ship them cheaper than Summit does.
