I doubt that is an olds 455 rocket. That blue is the later model color Olds used. Rockets were gold. Sure someone could have painted it but I'm putting money on it being a plain old low compression Olds motor from the late 70s early 80s. It will not be worth much so don't count or recouping much from that motor.

Here is a site with tons of Olds info.

Re: how much is this worth

Your best bet - is to find somebody local to it and have them go check it out - I am guessing that there is more than just rust in the rockers - this may save you a LOT of time and money.

Just a thought - although for $400 - I might take my chances...

Re: how much is this worth

You will probably be ok at $400. Dump the engine and recoup some money and tear into a major project it looks like. It is a shortbed, thats the good thing. Let us know what happens...

your research is wrong. That is a buick engine. Cant tell what size from the front as all buick engines look very similar from that angle. Chev, olds, and pontiac have the distributor in the back. Buick, cadilac and fords have the distributor in the front. As far as the value of the truck, I would put it at whatever the box is worth. Anyone that would drop a buick engine between the framerails, and walk away from the project, has probably hacked the rest of the truck as well.

I agree about the Buick engine. I noticed that at first but I didn't think that cap was on the distributor. It looked like it is just sitting there.

Re: how much is this worth

Yeah, that thing didn't just get dumped in that field. I'm thinking lots of surface rust, brake lines are probably shot, U-joints can't be good, etc. etc. You're looking at a ground up resto to whatever extent your wallet and abilities allow. Unless you're loaded (money wise) and have TONS of time on your hands, I'd look into spending maybe $2000 and get yourself something that is the model you want and actually runs. Once you do that, if you need a parts vehicle, THEN buy this lump of crap and have a field day!

Re: how much is this worth

Seeing your age, i assume you have more time than money. See if the owner would take $200 and keep the engine. I wouldn't think you would want to use it anyhow. Maybe you can settle at $250-$300. I would look it over good for rust and make sure it isn't packed full of mud. Paint jobs like that spook me sometimes. If it is fairly clean you can't hardly loose at this point. Just don't get excited and jump into just because you want a truck. There are more out there if you don't like something about this one.

Re: how much is this worth

I don't think $400 is a bad at all if it has a clear title and is solid. If it really is a 455 you could sell that for almost what you paid for the truck and not have much in the truck at all.

See if he would be willing to sell the bed off of it, and leave the rest where it sits.

If this is the case, run away from this one as fast as you can. If you can hold out, you should be able to find one around $1,000 that you could at least drive around while you fix it up. If you sunk $1,000 into this jewel it still wouldn't be able to see the road. It's worth $400 , but it sounds like you need some wheels ,and if this is the case, I do not think its a good deal. This one is not worth the gas to go look at it. JMO
