Is a big block converion possible?
I have a 62 C10 with a 350 small block. I would love to be able to put a big block in it. I was curious if anyone knew what all would have to be changed over to be able to put a big block in? Is is just a motor mount change or what.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=259536 This is what I did. You don't have to go to this extreme. I just wanted the engine to sit back in the engine compartment. Pretty much changing out the motor mounts is the major thing.
The frame on the 62 is also not as tall as on a 63-66 so spacers on top of the mounts will be needed. I know others will chime in with thier BB builds and pictures.

Re: Is a big block converion possible?
Thereis a little bit of a clearance with the rocker covers , it bolts to the bellhousing, and if you have side mounts on the 350 they bolt to the big block
If you are running an automatic you might want to go with 73-87 mounts and modify the tops to fit the frame or space them depends on your taste . some guys move the engine forward but back is better , and the distributor is farther forward in the BBC so clearance isn't an issue , the truck in my avatar has been big block since '78 with the bellhousing bolted to the stock crossmember

Re: Is a big block converion possible?
I can get my hands on a 454 pretty easily so I would say I'd go with a 454ci. This summer after my trip to KS junkyarding I plan to put a 73-87 front end under it to get the disc brakes and Ill also do the power steering conversion then to. Will that suspension be hefty enough to handle the extra weight of a 454? Im sure it will be but then agian I've never tooled around on something this old.

Re: Is a big block converion possible?
no worries on the weight issue - the old 350 in my 66 lowered the front end about 3 inches on the stock 6-cyl. springs, but I swapped in an 83 front end and the 454 in there now doesn't compress the springs noticeably

Re: Is a big block converion possible?
With completeing a 73-87 front end swap all I should have to do then is just swap out the small block motor mounts for big block ones correct? I have only tooled around with LT1's and LS1's. This 1962 is greek to me.
A plate will bolt onto the motor and the mount will bolt to the K-member then only one bolt holds the 2 together? 1Bad62Pro/Street I would love to do a full tub on the rear and do up a prostreet truck, but this truck has to get me to an from work, but then agian work is only 8 miles away. |

Re: Is a big block converion possible?
For motor mounts I like the '73-'87 style. If you get the frame brackets from a '73-'87 C20 they will fit the earlier frames better. Then the motor mounts themselves bolt to those. Then the 'clamshell' bolts to the block and a single 7/16" bolt locks the two together. Take a look inthe 'Projects and Builds' section at Protrash64's 1964 Suburban pics thread. Those are the mounts he is using, except he is using the C10 brackets.
