Re: 1972 GMC 3/4 TON 4X4 BIG BLOCK 4 SPEED (Craigslist)

After all these years of wanting one of these trucks, and being on this site and looking at all the nice trucks, I decided yesterday... I want a 72 GMC K-20, hopefully with a big block. That is the one I want first, and you have to post this CL find, near me I don't have the cash...

You all know that 4X4s were not available (factory) with a big block, correct?

Yes.
It's still a cool ride.
I think it would take a little TLC, but I thought the price was right.
I bet $3500 would buy it easily.

I didn't know that either, are you saying that there weren't any 68-72 4X4 Chevy trucks with a factory big block? is there is reason why GM didn't put a big block on a 4X4? was the big block engine in the above ad not original? There is a local seller advertising a 1972 4X4 Cheyenne with a 402 big block.

There were no big block 4x4 trucks in this body. I think the fit was tight with the transfer case being in the spot it is in. The 4x4 used the rear holes in the frame for the mounts which puts everything closer to the firewall. Hope that makes sense.

It's before my time but I've been told...that when one finds a BB in a 67-72 Chevy/GMC 4x4 truck...it is not a factory set up. So I am in ageement with OregonC20.

Re: 1972 GMC 3/4 TON 4X4 BIG BLOCK 4 SPEED (Craigslist)

There were a number of reasons GM didn't install Big Blocks in 4X4's until 1981. The Big Block was to heavy and made too much torque for the Dana 44 front axle and transfer case, the only automatic transmission used in 4X4's was the Turbo 350, and there were probably clearance issues as well. It is interesting that Ford didn't use 460's in their 4X4's until the 1980's as well.

Geeee...it's times like these I want to say the BB 4x4 was a package option along with the Corvette option but i'd rather not.

By the way...good info Bob B. Thanks.

It's funny you said that, because I was going to say that the Big Block 4X4 option was about as rare as the Corvette option!
