electric york compressor??
Looking at some pics over at socal and saw what looks to be an electric york compressor. Has anyone ever heard of doing this or seen this before? I was planning on running my york but it's ugly under the hood.

Now that's interesting. I would love to install a York but, as you mentioned, they are pretty ugly.
Looks like a starter motor. A hell of a current draw, but might work if the duty cycle is short enough to allow the battery to charge back up. |

I think that is an Oasis Compressor. They use a huge 12v motor like found on a winch to run them. MAJOR amp draw.

Found it and you are correct. It is the oasis hp1000 model and it uses the york compressor.

The heads are different. My york has the same hour glass shape between the intake and exhaust.

Yeah, I didn't dig deep enough to find the "exact" same model. I was pretty sure I had seen one before that was based on a York style pump.

You can couple it to a $100 or less winch motor and do the same thing for much less. A buddy of mine ran one in the back of his off road rig. He set it up to belt drive from winch motor to the york. Worked great. Yes it is a major amp draw but a York doesn't have to run very long at all to fill your tanks compared to other much smaller electric compressors. More comparable to spooling cable onto a winch with no load. Not at all like actually winching a heavy load.

That oasis is an amp drawing bastard. With all of the elecs in the truck we have to run a back up battery or the low voltage cut out will shut off the compressor. But it pumps the 10 gallons of air right up. The later ones are supposed to be better about this. Jay

I built my own and ran it on a f350 that I had a few years ago. Although they do draw alot of power, I never had any problems. Be sure that your charging system is in good shape if not upgraded with a higher output alternator. I used 2/0 welding cable with lugs from the welding supply and a Ford starter relay that was controlled by a regular compressor pressure switch. Make sure you use a pressure release valve between the compressor and your tank(s) to avoid high current draw on startup when tank(s) are partly full. I got the coupler from Grainger as well as all the controls. I'm sure there are cleaner looking parts, but mine was for a 4x4. I ran 2 tanks which I think were @ 7gal. each. The tanks were from a tractor trailer air brake system and still had the water drain which I kept. The motor was from a snow plow pump at the JY(for some reason I remember being told to NOT use a starter motor) When it was finished, it would fill the tanks to 105 psi which was the set point on the controls,(I've heard that the A/C systems operate at much higher) in 40-45 seconds and be able to run my 1/2" impact. Most of the parts came from the JY:motor $20, tanks $15, pump $40. Try to get the pump with the tapered shaft as I think it was the one with the higher cfm. It's a little bit of fab work but I know for sure that I was WELL under $200 for mine. Good luck!
