1966 Chevy 4x4
Well i figured beings im getting ready to final build my 66 ive been driving to school for a year now i might as well start a thread. I bought a 1966 chevy 1/2 ton lwb with a 250 straight 6 and a 4spd for $400 last spring. When i first bought it it was only running on 2 cylinders i rebuilt the head and fixed all the wiring to get the lights and signals to work and havent done much since then. This past summer i ran onto a great deal on rockers cab supports and fenders and i bought it all. So now i have everything to fix it but then i ran onto a 1977 shortbed 4x4 for $300 and so im going to part the body out. Ill keep the frame and axles it has 3.08 gears which helps because i am considering putting a cummins under the hood. Im hoping the body swap shouldnt be too hard but the end result should be a sweet truck and i love being different. I am the only one at school that drives anything older than 1975 and i love it.

Re: 1966 Chevy 4x4
Well today was somewhat productive but it wasnt great. i blew a tire out on the 66 on the way home from school luckily i had a spare at home and got the truck home i pulled the doors off and started to get the front clip off i hopefully can pull the front clip off tomorrow and then sell it and the doors and the hood. but i really need to work on our 2001 ford f350 diesel that we are trying to get running and once i get it running ill start driving it to school and start really tearing in to this build but baseball starts soon so im only gonna get to work on it on the weekends

Re: 1966 Chevy 4x4
Love those trucks. My first car/truck was a black 64 chevy 3 speed on the column which would lock up on me at the stop lights. But nothing a screwdriver and a little elbow grease couldn't fix. Oh, the memories...
Good luck on the build and keep those pics coming. Last edited by silver7; 03-29-2010 at 08:31 AM. |

Re: 1966 Chevy 4x4
Well summer is finally here so i now have plenty of time to work on it. Im working on pulling apart and selling the donor truck right now. Hopefully will have it taken apart by next week. As of now motor wise the cummins may not get put in right away but thats kinda up in the air right now. My main focus is getting the body work on the 66 cab done and prepping the frame and figureing out what im gonna do about mounts.

Re: 1966 Chevy 4x4
Alright so I havent said much about the project but thats also because its sat at a stand still due to a job high school and college classes and sports. Im currently taking my automotive engineering classes at a local college while finishing high school its a pretty sweet deal. Anyways I was unsure of weather to use the frame from the 77 or not and been thinking about selling everything or what to do till I recently ran onto a 62 chevy 4x4 on craigslist well i called the guy up and he wasn 650 i talked to him again and he said hed take $400 it has a straigh 6 4spd and 3.90 gears with a dana 44 up front and eaton in the rear but no transfer case. So now im taking the 62 body off cuz its pretty bad and put my cab and body on it and maybe put the 77 suspension and axles under this fram and put powersteering on too while im at it im also building a smallblock to go in it undecided wether to go 327 or 350 ive got a couple weeks i have to finish another guys 350 first. Ill try getting pics up of everything soon.

Re: 1966 Chevy 4x4
Very cool project you have going here! You should keep the step side bed for the 4x4, I think they look really cool on them. Ive never heard of a hydraulic clutch on one of these trucks, the guys in the 60-66 section would know more about it. May I also say that you SUCK for only paying $1100 for all of your trucks! Just kidding!
