Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
I think I might have to build one for my 97. I need almost a complete new system for the ac to work. Shop wanted 1300, and I could do it for about 500. 10 dollars sounds a lot better.
Thanks for the link!

Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
Yeah ten bucks if you have the stuff laying around. I didnt so i will have about 80 into it. But not too bad considering it would cost me a grand to install a whole system.

Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
Yeah 10 bucks really won't build it.
I just finished reading the instructable and it will take some work but I think I can find most of the parts from friends or in my basement. I sometimes have to drive 40+ miles to work and I would love to have one of these baby's sitting next to me on a hot summer afternoon.

Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
I remember my ex father in law telling me he would fill two plastic containers with ice and place them on the backseat floorboard in his old Dodge car.
By cracking open the rear windows he and my ex mom in law would get some nice cool air. However, that was in Oregon... Here in Texas it can easily get up into the 100's. I think I'll just stick to open windows and vents on my old GMC. As an old car salesman told me back when I bought my first car in '65, "Air conditioning in vehicles is for sissies. Pretty soon everyone is going to want them inside their houses." |

Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
My buddies racecar trailer had a similar setup. He had a big cooler on the tongue He'd fill with ice/water. had a pump running off the bottom to a radiator mounted inside the trailer. He pumped the icewater through the radiator and just set a big box fan in front of it to draw out the cool air. With the doors shut I really cooled the trailer down nice.

Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
Thats a good idea but how do you circulate the water through the core? Plus the heat from the engine would melt that ice so fast.
I finished wiring it today and so far it works pretty good. I just need to get some ice to run through it and mount the fans.

Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
Ok finally got around to posting a review from my trip about this. The fans I mounted were underpowered but I picked up a fan from Wal Mart that plugs into the cig lighter and it solved the problem. Now not as good as factory air but it was never expected to be. But it worked good enough to keep the truck cool enough that I didnt have to roll the windows down.

Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
My truck comes with 2 windows. If it's too hot for that factory option, she stays at home. Cool idea though.

Re: For those of us without air conditioning.
Well I have my 70 and my Harley. So I dont really have that option of leaving it home if its too hot. Thats the closest I have for air conditioning.
