Wannabees Unite!!

Come out of the woodwork and admit it.I am,"I don`t have a war era or older truck and want one bad".I am going to do what I can to get one.I will one day.I can`t afford to pay attention right now and that`s my only excuse.I have a new girlfriend and already have here prepped for what`s to come. It`s in our pre-nups .I have a new life ahead after my divorce and it`s no more having my dreams of what I wanted to on the back burner anymore.I`m still in that hole, but mark my words I`ll get it!It`s not just a truck, but I was just motivated to start this thread.I know I`m not the only one who always wanted one and has yet to come to have one.Or,had one and wants another. The closest I came was in`75 with a`47 Stude pickup with a Vette 283/4spd and Cragars.I`ve wanted another old truck since and here I am.
So,c`mon, let`s hear ya whine about,"I really want one but don`t have one...wah wah wah".
Heck, guys who do have them, tell us about how bad you had it before landing one.I`m thinking there aren`t too many,"I just saw one for sale and thought it was pretty cool,so I bought its".

Re: Wannabees Unite!!

Special-K, I REALLY hear you. I went through a divorce after 20 years married to my high school sweetheart. I got financially REAMED (and other ways too) but it's been 9 years and I have come back. I lost EVERYTHING at the time including my then near new '95 Volvo 850 Turbo R and a '57 Chevy stepside I had only begun to work on . I had NO car, I had to use my son's old ass primered Camaro and all it did was set my resolve to come back strong and live differently. I no longer live in the best part of town I did back then but I bought an old house I have been working on, I have a girfreidn who supports that. I have restored a couple old Porsches, bought a Hawaiian timeshare, now this truck.

All you guys that don't have one of these old trucks for various reasons, take heart. You CAN get here. Tell us your stories; we hear you. We've been there.

Re: Wannabees Unite!!

Yea, I love the style of the pre-47's too. When I had a chance to buy my 39 for 100 bucks, it just wasn't something I could pass up. I don't even have a solid plan for it yet. And since I've already started the AD/S-10 swap, I've got time to put together a solid plan for the 39. It kinda works out well since I get more excited about starting on it every time I see other's projects. And it gives me more push to finish up the AD.

Dan,that`s great to hear...the pulling yer arse out for a better life part. You`re an inspiration.I`ve passed the gettin`used to less thing and am on to the gettin`on part. This gal came along at just the right time.I wasn`t lookin`but startin`to feel enough`s enough and that`s when we met.Gotta find some good work or a job with someone and everything will be just fine.Until then,it`s still 10x better than before my divorce. That early hauler will come one along.
I hear you, too,Rob.We`re in the same boat and she`s still afloat, just settin` a bit low in the water, yet, for me.

Re: Wannabees Unite!!

I bought a 42 Chev truck quite a few years ago. It was a complete truck, but in pieces. I brought the grill and the headlight buckets home. He also signed the title over to me. I was supposed to pick up the rest in a week. This was before I had my own trailer so I was going to borrow a buddy's. I ended up having to wait a couple of weeks to pick up the truck. When I went to the fellas house he had moved and the truck was gone...no forwarding address...oops! I still have the grill and the buckets. I never transferred the title in to my name. Sometimes I think about taking it in and seeing if the transfer will go through.

Edit...I almost forgot, I had a 38 Ford truck too. I had to sell it though when we were trying to come up with the money to buy our first house.

Re: Wannabees Unite!!

I had a 37 Chevy truck in high school. Being a dumb kid I got talked out of it by an older guy (probably 25) who traded me my first VW for it. I thought I got the better end of the deal then!

Re: Wannabees Unite!!

If I had one when I first wanted one I`d have 20 by now. Before I had my place, but was renting on a farm with plenty of space for my junk,I could have had three trucks for sale by my good friend. They were all 11/2 tons from 36-40.I let them go because I wasn`t exactly that "put" at the time.I`ve ended up with stuff spread far and wide as it is and just pretty much have it all rounded up and dealt with after 25-30 years.

Re: Wannabees Unite!!

My uncle has a 46 Chevy flatbed farm truck ( 2 ton I guess) that's been sitting in the same spot behind their house since I was a kid. It's still not in too bad of shape and has been in the family forever. My cousin and I used to take turns crawling behind the wheel "driving" it all over the place. (when the snakes and bees didn't run us out) I would love to have it and restore it all original. However, I just don't have the room or spare funds for it right now. Hopefully one day I will have the room and money for it.....if they don't have it towed away before.

Keep your hopes up fella's, dreams do come true! I went down to my visit my Aunt and Uncle this evening and they said the 46 and an F12 Farmall tractor were mine if I wanted them. I haven't seen the truck in a while and I hope it hasn't deteriorated too much. It was dark and the road back there was still snow covered, so I wasn't able to go check them out.

Add me to that list. I have almost every era truck or burb except a pre 47. Would really like to buy or trade for one.

Re: Wannabees Unite!!

My 61 K10 was being restored over a very lengthy period of time. At about year 7, I spied a 1945 GMC 1/2 ton on the side of a major road up here. It was being sold by a moving company. The truck was complete and I had never seen a GMC of that era in person before. The truck was running, complete and in decent shape. I called him and made an offer and bought it. Spent the next several years in making it better. It now has a 302 inline 6 with an NOS 3 speed and a Truckstell torquetube overdrive in it. 3.55 R&P out back. It still runs 6 volts and has it's original Huck brakes. I think that the original brake liines were replaced by me. At the time, they looked to be copper and that's a no-no. Well, they were copper and that's what was used from the factory. Those lines were made differently than plumbing water line is now.
So, now the truck can hit 100mph. It can cruise over 400 miles between fillups thanks to an auxiliary fuel tank behind the seat. Handles well with a sway bar and radials. And it still hauls the leaves and brush to the dump very week. I do get a few looks from people when I bring that truck down to the leave dump!

PS The 61 is complete, but it's the '45 that gets driven everywhere. I take it from NH to PA once every year. 800 miles round trip-2 fillups.

If you have a '45 than your the only other person i am aware of besides me that had/has one, oh i know ther has to be more but i have not seen a any personally.

I bought a '45 way back about '84 for $300, pretty rough shape but drivable, barly! I had it about 7 years before i lost hope that i could ever restore or rod it, i had such a limited knowledge base (before internet) and finally lost interest, sold it for $350 because i wanted room in my garage, i have no shop, then about 5 years later i started kicking myself in the butt for it and vowed to never sell out of another vehicle no matter what. I heard the guy did a full on restoration to it and its now worth a lot of coin.. Sigh!

Believe it or not.............there are actually more 1945 GMC 1/2 tons built than 1941 1/2 tons. A LOT more.

Re: Wannabees Unite!!

i'm working on the '66 at the moment but next summer I am going to start on a rat roddish daily driver built around a 4 cyl s10. don't get your panties all bunched, I'll do a transverse suicide spring on a I beam in the front. it'll be real low with a small bed and a set of bags in the back. gonna really shoot for 23+ mpg. we will see.
