Ca smog
do older cars have to meet the same requirements as newer cars in term of smog? i was just thinking with the little things my 76 has is it going to be extremely hard to smog? or are the standards lowered?

Re: Ca smog
there are a few counties in CA that do not require smog. I used to have a '76. passed smog like a champ. it had true dual exhaust with no cats. smog tech told me that as long as all the factory smog components were intact, I could pass visual. my truck passed the sniffer test too.

Re: Ca smog
my 79 passed fine, still has the original cat on it. Its mostly visual since these earlier trucks dont have O2sensors and no computer to read off of. Just make sure your carb and timing are in spec of what its saposed to be and you should be fine, check all your vacuum hoses for cracks also.

From the horses mouth: http://dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm
If you recently acquired the truck and have yet to transfer ownership you will have to smog it. If you have had it registered in your name already then El Dorado Co. does not currently require a bi-annual inspection. At least that's the way I read it.

Re: Ca smog
yeah i just bought it, the guy i bought it from told me it would pass smog and did run, i assumed it didnt and bought it for parts, luckily with new sparkplugs it fired up, its running a little rich but other than its not smoking or anything so i have high hopes, it has cats so that should help, the only bug i need to fix is the PO swapped carbs and didnt reconnect the coal cannister, the smog pump and everything else is still intact
what happens if you fail a test? |

Re: Ca smog
standards will be the same as when the truck was sold the first time (off the lot) it must still have all the smog that came with the truck. (2 cats is illegal for example, even tho ur makn it more efficent, its illegal) ca sucks.

Re: Ca smog
should only be 1 i believe. Also if you can get ahold of a owners manual itll have the vacuum diagram in there for the hoses, i have one for my 79 worked perfect. Or if the radiator support still has the veci label then it should have the diagram right on it.

Re: Ca smog
i think everything is set up correctly, there is a line going from the cannister to the carb, however instead of connecting to the carb it is just laying on the intake, its an edelbrock 1903 if anyone knows where it should hook up
