What rear axle?
My stepdad bought a 79 Scottsdale 20 pickup today for 600 bucks, was sitting on a farm, was last licensed in '97...
Runs great, tranny is a little weak.. Anyone know what rear axle should be under a truck like this ? The rear cover has 14 bolts and has 6 flat sides (shape), and the hubs are real short, they stick out past the wheels only about 2". Hubcaps can fit over them. It is full floating, and has no 60 cast into the housing that I could find. There are bolts around the pinion shaft area to drop the pinion gear out. Wierd looking rear axle, dont think Ive seen any like it before.... Any ideas ? Oh, and could a 305 come in one of these trucks with an auto trans ?? Or were all 3/4T trucks 350-powered ???? You just answered you own question without realizine it. 3/4 tons used a 14bolt rear end. 10.5" ring gear. 7000lb carrying capacity.
SBC Motors for the 20 series were the 250I6, 292I6, 307('73), 350 and 400. No 305's. ------------------ Chris Lucas 1973 Chevy C-10 1975 Chevy Silverado Captkaos' Page

GM 14bolt. As far as I know they were all "normal" length, or at least the ones I have seen. I have an '82 C-20 and a friend has a '75 C-20, both are the same in "length" from what I remember. And they stuck our from the wheels about 2"
307 was optional only one year for the 20 series - 1973. For the 292 Inline6, it was optional for 20 series from 73-86. ------------------ Chris Lucas 1973 Chevy C-10 1975 Chevy Silverado Captkaos' Page

Wow, the 292 lasted that long? Awesome, learn something (or a bunch of things) everyday, hehehe....
So definitely no 305 available in C-20's ever ?? Im used to seeing the big hubbed 3/4 T rear axles of the 67-72 trucks. Those hubs stick way out compared to the ones on this 79, about twice as far... Looks identical to the one in that pic... The cover looks totally different than any other rear cover I've ever seen, but same as the cover in the pic above. So standard equipment carrying capacity of the 3/4 ton rear axles in 79 were 7,000lb ?? Awesome.... Thanks Captkaos ! |

No, no 305 in the 20 Series.
I think the 292 was used up until 1991 on the Heavy duty trucks, but don't quote me on that. Still trying to find out about these, I want a 292. Yes, if it looks like the above, 7000lbs capacity. ------------------ Chris Lucas 1973 Chevy C-10 1975 Chevy Silverado Captkaos' Page

Kind of off the subject but I dont think that the 14 bolt rearend is called that because of the bolts on the cover. I believe that they have 14 bolts on the ring gear, hence the name.

VNTG SUV
You are correct, 14bolt has 14 bolts in the ring gear, but it also has 14 in the cover. Same applies ot a 12bolt ------------------ Chris Lucas 1973 Chevy C-10 1975 Chevy Silverado Captkaos' Page
