wiper problems
Hey All!
Need a favor. The wipers quit on my 72 Chevy C20 the other day. Had a friend driving it, following me in my other Chevy to a project. He said they just died but when we got stopped, we could still hear the motor running but nothing moving with the switch on. Now that I have it in my shop, we can't get a noise out of it. I got a new switch from Brothers and tried to install it tonight. It popped the wiper fuse twice when it was turned on. Must have a short someplace or is the motor just fried out? No wipers are a pain in the ... in Oregon! Any help, thanks!! Last edited by 72 Longhorn Lady; 03-10-2010 at 05:29 AM. |

I would replace the wiper motor. It sounds like you have an internal short. It's not a fun job but it's not the worst thing I have done. The bolts are 5/16" if I remember right and there are two multi wire electrical plugs and one single wire plug. The clip on the wiper arms under the cowl vent and the arms can be removed and replaced without removing the cowl vent by using a screw driver or similar tool and a magnet. Hold the magnet on the clip as you remove it so it doesn't go flying. If your paint is good put some masking tape on the vent bars before you start. Oh, and welcome to the board. LockDoc

Re: wiper problems
Thanks LockDoc,
I was afraid of that! Luckily, I saved putting in a new stereo and rewiring the speakers till now so I can see it and get to it. Previous owner had already cut the original radio face so I got a big hole to work through. |

Re: wiper problems
Make sure it isn't getting hot if you're going to leave it for a few days. Mine quit on me Sunday, so I shut the switch off, then we smelled something. The duct tape on the defroster duct was smoldering, the motor got so hot it almost ignited the duct.

Thanks Trip59!
I had other stuff to do to her in the dash so I pulled the battery terminal. But good thinking! (Yes, its a her - Irene II. After my Dad's 71 C10) |
