Shifter Options

I have a 56 chev auto (350 turbo) It has a BM quik shifter in it. Great for going in a straight line. I would like to replace it with something more user friendly. Is there something from a wrecker that would work or should i be looking at Lokar or Hurst? Please advise

Re: Shifter Options

I have a 7oor4 in my 55 and I'm going to run this Lokar Shifter. Probably the best one I've found. I'm getting mine tall (22") but they make a smaller and a taller one. It's push button on the top. A little pricey though at $270

Re: Shifter Options

I've been looking into the Gennie shifters for the '52 /4L60. I found them at hotrodexpress.com for 200 bucks. I like the way they select the gears better than the push botton Lokar.

I have the same need for hauling 2 kids in car seats in my 49, so I went with an auto s10 column, and will use Lokar's shifter linkage to hook that up to my 4L60. I thought I would modify the original cable shifter...but for $50 I think the Lokar linkage is hard to beat.

Re: Shifter Options

I have a locar and im not very happy with it. The button sticks at times and you have to push it between odd gears.

Thats too bad. My friend has it and has never had one problem with it. Sounds like you bought a lemon.

Re: Shifter Options

I had a Lokar in my '62, so maybe it was the 500+hp, but that push button would rattle like crazy going down the road, which drove me crazy. Had to drive around holding the shifter with my thumb on the button just so it wouldn't rattle. Went with a Gennie in the '48...I really like the way it gates through the gears much like a column shifter and NO button.

Anyway, just something to consider. Although it sounds like with the need to haul 2 kids around converting to a column shifter would be the way to go though...

Re: Shifter Options

My 53 has a 700R4
It also has a tilt column out of some sortof GM car or pikup
maybe the 86 Blazer that donated the chasis
all the origional linkage is hooked up and it works perfectly
so why not go with a shift column ?
