New truck...new member!

Hello everyone! I bought this truck two weeks ago, and am thoroughly in LOVE

It's a 1971 c-20 350/TH350. The motor is a TXB block out of a 75 C-20, unkown when it was rebuilt, but it runs really well. new edelbrock carb, intake, and valve covers. The rest of the truck (other than the rear bumper and steering wheel) looks original. The interior is OG i think?

What do you guys think?

can someone decode the protecto-plate for me? I want to know if both sets of exterior trim are indeed original...and, what emblems should be on the tailgate?

Re: New truck...new member!

Nice truck! It looks to me like, according to the spid, that the truck was solid red and just had the lower body side mouldings. Someone might have added the upper moulding and painted it white and red. They are correct for the year though. Joseph

Thanks! weird that it has a 4x4 shroud...what is different on a two wheel drive? so there should be no labeling on the tailgate? I saw a black band in the LMC catalog that is like the woodgrain one... or do you think the tailgate isn't original? maybe the truck orginally had the tailgate with stamped letters?

Re: New truck...new member!

the motor sits father back in a 4x4 so the shroud is a lot deeper to reach the fan.the custom and custom deluxe trim option has a narrow upper and lower molding on the tailgate unless it has some special promotional package which would be listed on the spid in the glove box.the woodgrain tailgate band will be on the top of the line trim packages with cst trim or special promo.Trucks with factory black lower molding will have narrow upper and lower tailgate trim. trucks with woodgrain lower trim will have narrow upper and wide woodgrain lower trim on tailgate like the gmc super custom shown in the previous pic.go to the picture gallery and look at some other members trucks and you will be able to see the differant trim levels.the smooth tailgate is aftermarket.all factory chevy and gmc gates are lettered even under the wide molding.

Re: New truck...new member!

More pics, and it looks like it has "B85 belt molding" and "BX2 body side mldg-wde L" are those the same thing? from what i can tell both sets are original...eventhough the truck started as solid color "light red". ALso, what should be on the tailgate? i'm not sure it is original...

Re: New truck...new member!

If you are referring to the upper and body side moldings your SPID indicates Option BX2 - BODY SIDE MOLDING WIDE (lower) and B85 - BELT MOLDING (upper) trim moldings which is the same on my GMC Super Custom. The tailgate also should have the upper and lower trim moldings with a Wide band Chevrolet or GMC across the middle. The tail and backup lights should also have a surrounding trim piece.

Hope this helps!

Re: New truck...new member!

I'm not sure about 71 but I believe in 72 the BX2 and B85 options included the tailgate moldings as well. Here is a picture of mine.

Re: New truck...new member!

Nice truck. Lots of good info here. You will find everything you need to know. Just for the record a protect-o-plate was a credit card sized plate that came with the truck. It was not attached to the truck. It was given to the original owner. The label you are referring to is the Service Parts Identification label or SPID.
