Which of these two clutch/brake pedal assymblies are right? The one on the left reportedly came out of an automatic equipped truck... notice the stud circled in red? Its for a big return spring for a clutch pedal. The other more rusty bracket came out of a standard/manual trans truck... notice the return spring circled in red.
Which setup is correct... or do you need both springs? Ive got a NOS clutch pedal and its got holes for both return springs. ??? Which is right/better? One spring or both or???

The pedal assembly I just pulled out of my shorty with SM420 manual trans looks just like that rusty one in your pics. I'm thinking the other setup is from a '73+ model? But I could be wrong.

I just went out and looked at mine, 70 Chevy CST, 4 speed,350. It looks exactly like the one on the left. Hope that helps.

DonCST... is your truck a 4X4? I think the other trucks are 2wd. How about a picture of your z-bar? Maybe thats the difference.

The rusty one on the right is the exact one that is in mine. All you need to do is remove the clutch pedal from that assembly with its bushing and install it into your stock one, the automatic style is exactly the same minus just the clutch pedal. I bought a whole assembly but added just the clutch pedal to mine with no problems. I run a hydraulic clutch so i didnt need much spring i only used the one softer spring.

hey man my 67 has the one that is in question (left) im runnin a327 with a 4 speed and there is no return spring on it and mine works fine just has the spring on the clutch fork... if u want i can take a pic of it tomorrow.

I bought one to put in mine for my conversion (PO cut the clutch pedal off with a hacksaw when they put the auto in...) both the one that came out of my 72, and the one that went in look identical to the one on the right.

That big vertical spring is both a return and an assist spring. When the pedal goes past half-depressed, the spring starts to shorten again, thereby giving your left leg a little help in fully disengaging the clutch.

My '67 has the massive spring setup.

OK, but is your truck a 4X4 or was it at 4X4 at one time or in a previous life??

Nope. It's been a 2WD all its life.

OK... last question (I promise)... was your truck originally a manual or was it converted to a manual from an automatic? Im just trying to determine if there was a reason to have one bracket or the other in these trucks... and so far, unless its the 4X4 thing, I cant come up with a reason.

No biggie. It's been a 4spd all its life too. It has the removable tunnel.

After rereading the thread, I had a thought: I bet the trucks with the high hump (4spd, 4WD, BB) all came with the massive spring setup since they were the ones most likely to get the HD 12" clutch. I have no hard evidence for this thought other than most of the 4spd trucks in the thread have the big spring.

i just went through this very same deal when assembling my truck out of several , the pedal assembly on the left matches the setups i have out a 69 and 70 model truck the one on the right matches the ones that i have out of both of my 72 model trucks i currently have the 69 assembly in my 72 and everything hooked up and worked fine for me.

72 half ton 4x4 4 speed never been anything other. Identical to the black one in your pic.
Like someone else said it is a return/assist spring that you don't absolutely need. for the sake of ending curiosity I took mine off and tried it. It still works but not as smooth. hope this helps.

No head gasket or transmission issues yet. fingers crossed
