In a behind the seat tank.....how many inches is equal to a gallon? I'm looking for a fuel sending unit at the moment and am trying to figure out my fuel level. I'm sure some of you guys have been there.

I've been there but I use to check it by lighting a match and looking inside.
Seriously, I would fill it up and record the miles driven and gallons used then compare that to the tank capacity.
The shape of the tank might be such that you can't make a linear scale.

Match...Gas...LOL...I think I will stick with the dowel rod.

The tank being the shape that it is will cause a variation in the gallons per inch as measured on a stick. When the tank is below one half, each inch will be close to 1.1 gallons. If the gas is closer to the top each inch will be less than a gallon.

That can't be right-everybody knows that the last half of the tank goes faster than the first half!

You could always run it out of gas and tap a brass plug in the bottm and top of the tank behind the drivers seat and run some clear fuel tubing between them. Then you will always know how much fuel is left.
