McGaughy Big Brake kit

This is for Aggie91 or anyone else that is interested in the McGaughy 13 Big Brake kit. The good news is, it's a true 13" front AND rear kit with an E-brake. The bad news is it will not just "bolt on" the rear. Based on these posts it requires machining the rear axle flange.

If your building one from scratch, that might not be a big deal. If your trying to do a weekend conversion it's something to factor in.

Anyone else have any insight on ths kit?

Re: McGaughy Big Brake kit

I have been selling a bunch of them. It is true that there is some machining on the rear axle snout in order for the rotor to fit... that would be the only down-side. I consider this kit to be the best "bang for the buck". It's functional AND inexpensive.

Nate can you give us detailed info on what is required. From the posts I have read, the axle flange "and" the back of the rotor require machine work.

If you don't mind, post a forum price as well?

From my experience, the only machining was the axle snout on the rear axle shafts. They had to be turned down so that the rotor would slide over it. I will post up some prices next week. I might not be able to advertise it below a certain price, but will definitely make forum members a special deal.

Re: McGaughy Big Brake kit

Make sure you check the run out on the front hubs. Mine were so out the wheels looked bent. McGaughys is horrible to deal with if you have any issues. I'm having my machinist fix them rather that dealing with them anymore. I should have spent the extra money on the Wilwood kit.

Unfortunately, no one from McGaughys is a member here. There are a couple of their distributors here but that's not what we need.

Maybe I can find someone there that is willing to help/

I gave them a chance to make it right and they didn't... moving on. I wonder how many kits went out with bad hubs like mine I only bought the front kit for the spindles, hubs and rotors. We're using Wilwood calipers and their rotors to do our own rear "kit".

My friend that I bought them thru has done all he can except send them back. It's not worth the hassle when my machinist will fix both hubs for just over 100.00. The point is that I shouldn't have to do that. I was just burnt when the sales guy argued with me about the "straightness" of the hubs.

Re: McGaughy Big Brake kit

This was exactly what I was curious about. How involved are the rears to make fit? And, will the front kit work with the McG. HD drop spindles I already have for my '76 Blazer, or will I have to just sell them?

Since the rotors are 1" there only a few Wilwood calipers that will work. I'll probably go with one of the Dyna series calipers. My fabricator will make the rear caliper mount to attach to the diff housing and cut new caliper mounts to attach to the machined spindles. Still need to decide if I want red or black calipers...red truck with red frame and suspension might need some black to break it up.

Thanks Ken for posting this.

I am still thinking of doing this on my 65 if I put a stock style 12 bolt back in the truck. The machine work for me is not an issue, I have a lathe at work to use anytime...

I am also thinking of the rear kit for my 98 DD that I have. It is close to needing brakes on the rear and I might as well upgrade to disc if I am going to spend money on brakes. I am just not sure if the flange the drum brake backing plate bolts to is the same as the earlier trucks that the kit is designed for. I will have to get sometime to look into this before spending my coin on the kit.

Re: McGaughy Big Brake kit

I have done a little more research on these kits. Other then the spindle for the Front and the bracket for the rear, the parts are available from mulitple sources and are all OEM parts.

Here is some of what I found:

Those rotors are for the front of a C5 Corvette with an additional 5 on 5 patterned machined into them.
Raybestos Part #56700PR, Right Front, Cross Drilled and Slotted.
Raybestos Part #56701PL, Left Front, Cross Drilled and Slotted.
OR
Part # 56701, Left Front, Plain
Part # 56700, Right Front, Plain.
These last 2 are $42.79 each plus shipping from Rock Auto. Currently they have a rebate on them from Raybestos.
Technically they are 325mm in diameter. The hub hole is 2.78" and needs to eb opened up to 3.063". Also needs the 5 on 5 pattern added to them.

Kore3 also makes them with the 5 on 5 pattern already added...and the hub hole enlarged.
http://www.kore3.com/proddetail.php?prod=10172-02 (right side rotor) I believe that they are $120 each from them with both patterns and the center hub hole opened up to 3.063".

The Caliper is from a 1985 Cadillac Seville rear with parking brake.
On Ebay, look for Item number: 140354622359 or search for Cadillac Metric Rear Brake Calipers E Brake Emergency.

For the front, the spindle is still an issue with out going to CPP or McGaughy's. BUT Kore3 is working on the spindle and hub for the 73-87, 88-91, and 92-98 GM trucks. They already have a Hub with the ABS relector wheel and just need to work on the spindle. It is not on their web site, but I talked to one of them yesterday about this.

All I need to do is figure out which size master cylinder is best for this set up...

I have the 1st (or one of the 1st) KORE3 big brake kits for the C10 spindle. I worked w/Tobin on them (modifying different spindles & such).

I cut up a stock spindle & dropped spindle to verify the brackets would work for him.

I have some 13.4" rotors, dual piston PBR calipers, & KORE3's billet hub (both w/car & truck pattern).
