292 problems lean or advance?
ok ive got a 292 with manual tranny (sm465), the motor will not run above 2000rpms for more then 8 secs, it just stops and if let foot off accelerator pedal fast enough sometimes it will catch itself and idle, or it just dies. it does this driving and in neutral. i've replaced all fuel lines, checked lines into tank, and tank itself replaced fuel pump, and gone through carb(PO used silicone to seal gaskets! its everywhere...). i looked at my dizzy and i cant get the vacumn advance to work. will that cause my problem, or is my carb running to lean due to silicone everywhere. i tested advance by sucking and blowing into line and nothing moved. or is it both? im trying to find another carb been looking two months cant find one i can afford. or works with my motor.

You might want to rebuild the carb, they are not that complicated.
I had a similar problem years ago with a little Datsun, 1972. I took the carb apart to rebuild it and found a piece of teflon tape in the gasoline inlet. Apparently the PO had done some work on it and used teflon tape to hook the fuel line to the carb. I removed all the signs of teflon tape and rebuilt the carb and never had another problem. Also you may have a problem with the float sticking or debris in the carb. Danny

forgot to mention ive done that, i think theirs silicone in the carb where i cant see?

Check the parts for sale section, some one may have one for sale.
People seem to like to remove the 6's and put in 350's. Danny

sounds like a carb or fuel issue, if it was timing it wouldn't take 8 seconds to die/bog it would do it immediately. I would say float out of adjustment or maybe plugged high speed circuit. If there is silicone in there you may be better to swap, you never know where it may have gotten into.

believe it or not i've been trying to find a carb to replace this one for 2 months just spent 3hrs walking through another junkyard trying to find a carb but no luck. . really starting to drive me crazy how hard can it be too find a 1 bbl carb? got another junkyard about 1.5hrs away i hope to hit sometime this coming week.

i say take this opportunity to get a custom 4 barrel intake and a bigger carb on there. you can also get a petronix electronic ignition kit and full roller valve train for these big boy straight 6's.

i would buy new/rebuilt, or hop the 292 up but i am extremely tight on money as my wife lost her job and my hours are low at work. out of curiosity what is the difference between the bellhousing bolt patterns on a 292 and a 401 gmc v6? my dad has a perfectly running 401 in our c60, im tempted to swap it over and start the rebuild of the 292. i know its a little heavier, 680lbs vs 880lbs so my dad suggested bb front springs(ive sat under the hood and the truck doesnt sink im 165lbs so 35 more makes the 200, doesnt seem bad). and we've looked over motor mounts my dads sure he can make/modify motor mounts, so im stuck on mounting to my sm465, or swap in the 6spd from c60? opinions?

Not sure on the bell housing, but I think the springs will hold it fine. Just think of it as getting a free drop with the engine swap.

The 292 weighs 457 Lbs with iron manifolds. I have no direct experience with the GMC V6s, but I seem to remember they had a different bellhousing. The '63 -and-later L-22 series L6s have the same bellhousing as the Chevy V8s. No idea on GMC V6 weight. I'd guess it's heavier.
[EDIT] I checked on www.6066gmcguy.org website, the 305E = 795# and the 351= 860#. I ditched my Monojet 32 years ago. Ran the Holley 390 for 25 years, than ditched that after an engine rebuild and went with the Edelbrock 500 CFM.
