700R auto transmission for C10 69

Finally: yesterday I started to collect all the necessary parts in order to converting, four speed compound manual into 700R4 A/transmission my C10longbed stepside 69 .

Things I already have are:
700r4 transmission
converter
flywheel
starter
braket for tv cable and acelerator

Things I´m missing, unless I´m forgetting something.
crossmember
shifter system.

oil lines
On the following days I´ll be asking questiions and sugestions.
If you have a post where I can see how you did it I´d like to take a look.
Now I´ve some questions:
Can I use any crossmember from 82-87 truck , equiped whit 700R4?
could I install a Camaro shifter system? if a member of this forum did it can you give ideas.
thank you

Don't forget the trans mount and metric bolts for it as well as the starter bolts.

Re: 700R auto transmission for C10 69

Thanks TX: because I took everything of a Van C20, I saved every single nut and lug.
The trans mount is on the tranny but I´m not sure if is the same for car,van and truck.
Also:could any floor shifter system of a vehicle with 700r4 be a donnor
thanks

Re: 700R auto transmission for C10 69

Before starting to do anything, I just took a look for which parts need to be removed, and I notice the old transmission is hold on what I think is a crossmember.
Do I need to remove that crossmember?
I Know I need to install a new and the new is going to be more at the back.

Yes you need to remove the std trans crossmember. You will need a auto trans radiator for the cooler, and cooler lines.

Re: 700R auto transmission for C10 69

OK this weekend I picked up shifter from a Montero Sport and cable from a Camaro. I noticed I need to make a little modification, I still nedding oil lines, trans cooler and crossmember. I said I took the transmission from a Chevy Van and I noticed crossmember is different from a truck and truck and suburban look for me the same.
Could I install one of Suburban?
Also some trucks and suburban they have 350s,400s or other auto/trans. 81s and old I think.
Is the same crossmember?
One more question: Is there any difference in performance using camaro, truck, van or suburban converter or all are the same?
Thanks for your pattience on my questions, I´m not a mechanic but I want to learn.

Re: 700R auto transmission for C10 69

Well: if you are asking about speedometer cable, I still needing a cable because the original cable is too short and 350s tranys are shorter than 700s anyways, I can't use one of 350s and 700s tranys are at 82 and newer trucks and the ends(terminals, are different)
May be a member can give us ideas.

Check with NAPA. I bought a longer cable there for my 66 when I changed transmissions some years ago.

Re: 700R auto transmission for C10 69

my 700r4 is newer and requires a conversion gear (speedo bullet) on the output shaft to use the original speedo. Personally I'm just going to upgrade to an electric speedo.

but if you want to go through the motions:

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm

You can probably find most of what you need at a wrecking yard.

I'd like to mention as well, the guy I bought my truck from has hooked up 4th gear to a toggle switch under the dash. I've heard that you can pull a vacuum overdrive control from a late model burb or tahoe.

Any one know what the parts are called?

Re: 700R auto transmission for C10 69

I did the swap. You also need to look at the parts to run the converter lockup.

here is a link to a pic of the vacume switch in the faq section

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1117260504

some added parts you might need.
-a lock up converter
-the electrical harness which plugs into the trans.
-a brake switch with two contacts
-and the vac switch wiring.

You can grab all these at a salvage yard.
This might change depending on how you actually decide to hook it up. I will see if I can find the article explaining the. brake, vacume, toggle switch method.
