Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
137+/- riding shotgun in a friends full race 66 Fairlane GT with a 427/4 speed on a 2 lane surface street. It was exciting to say the least.
Behind the wheel I once had my 46 Ford sedan up to 120 mph indicated. No idea what the true speed was, but it certainly was thrilling to manage at that speed, not exactly a sports car in the handling department. These days I'm not in that big of a hurry!

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
Well my truck speedo said 100 mph. But I'm sure i was doing about 70. But riding a Kaw. ZX12, I did hit 170 mph, with another gear to go. But was running out of road. Scary and fun at the same time. Speed is a drug!

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
DRIVING: Well, I raced my old '78 C10 against a friends 98 Camaro. I held the Camaro to 127-130 mph before he started to pull away, but I was still climbing in RPM. I believe I got slightly over 135 before I backed out of it. The Hood was really floping on the outside edges, it was vibrating like a mother and the steering had a VERY LIGHT touch.
RIDING: When I was in high school I worked the parts counter at an auto supply that was really close to Lonestar Classics (kit car Cobra's). They had one that a customer had sunk tons of money into. It was ridiculous. BUILT Ford 347 stroker, Whipple charged, T-56 and 3.73 gears in a Jag IRS. They told me he had 25K in the engine alone. Anyway, the owner of the company took me up a desolate part of highway. The tires were still screaming as we passed 100 and he let off as we passed through 165. Man, that sucker was still pulling like a freight train. I have zero doubt it would have gone 185-190. Right before he let off, he leaned over and said (more like he screamed), "The only thing between us and concrete is a sheetmetal floor pan and some fiberglass." I did get to ride in an ATOM that a friend was working on at his shop. Didn't get over 80, but man, what a blast. Nowdays, I rarely get over 85mph. I am also more aware of the tire ratings. The tires on my '78 were only rated at 87 mph. Only slightly exceeded that.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
In the mid late '80's, I was a supervisor for Domino's Pizza in Ohio. Our Regional Director was into fast cars and had a Porsche 930 Turbo. Well he knew I liked cars too and asked me if I wanted to pick it up at the dealership in the southern part of Columbus and drive it back to the northern part- by myself.
He had some mods done to it- lowered and some other stuff that I can't remember now. I had driven a couple fast cars before- BB Corvettes and such- but I had never known anything like this. When the turbo kicked in- it was unreal. I was going up the 270 by-pass around Columbus and was having a blast. Well then I noticed a cop about 3 or 4 cars ahead of me. It was play time over -until I let him get far enough ahead of me that when I blew by him and took the off ramp onto High Street at 95 MPH that it was too late for him to turn around to catch me. Never got to drive it again. Last edited by DPowers; 04-05-2010 at 11:11 PM. |

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
I've been 185 mph in my old 07 Corvette Z06.............Bone stock they will run 198plus......At 185 mph I was around 6400 rpm...... Redline after my tune was 7100 rpm........Sure I could have hit 200 plus but I ran out of room and had to back off....... God I miss that car.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
In central Illinois I hit 115mph in my '69 Chevelle with a 307/T350. It was a two lane road out in the country where I could see for a 1/2 mile. I remember the car felt strange like it was floating and about that time a rock came out of one of the tires and smacked up in the fenderwell making a really loud bang and I about had a heart attack!!

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
That car wasnt really too bad!! Holley/intake/headers..... I was already on the fly when I decided to do it. I never have been much of a speed demon anyway; hurts the wallet to have broken pieces on the ground.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
did about 127 when I was 17 or so. I don't speed much anymore, and the area near my house isn't conducive to speeding anyway. I would LOVE to have a safe place to try to go faster tho.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
164 on a Kawasaki ZX10, 177 in a Lotus Esprit V8/SE twin turbo.
I drive pretty sane these days, though. Anything above 125 or so and things start to look, feel and sound weird!

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
143 in my brother's VW Golf GTI VR6. Never cared for forign cars, but he has given me an appreciation for VW's. I had to back out of it because I was coming into Boise on the freeway weaving through 5:00 traffic and it can be a mess, not to mention the cops. I bet that thing has no problem pinning the 160 speedo. Did I mention this was right after driving it off the dealer lot and the shifter linkage fragged? He was all bent out of shape that I broke his new car, but one of the pins had vibrated loose in the shifter.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
530 mph (.77 mach)... Laying on my belly Passin-gas! Haha 22 years KC-135, Instructor / Evaluator Boom Operator with nearly 6000 hours, refueled other US and Nato aircraft in the air. And, yes it was the coolest thing ever! Not as cool as family, kids, and grand-kids... and old chevy trucks but, cool. Saw a lot of planes come and go, traveled the world, and met some amazing people... much like we do here!

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
I've had the V70R to a smidge over 160mph.
The wife's GPS captured this, which must be a glitch, b/c I doubt it'll go over 140mph and she gets nervous at 80mph.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
It's not so much how fast you have ever gone, but more like how well was the vehicle equipped to handle that speed.
Many moons ago I did 105 mph in my Model A on Interstate 70. With that flat windshield it felt like 205! It still had plenty more in it... I didn't! I used to think that was fast... then I moved to Colorado... Speed Limit is 75 mph, now I drive to work everyday with the cruise set on 82 mph, people passing me like I am an old man. Wait... I am an old man. Last edited by lakeroadster; 04-06-2010 at 07:42 AM. |

The fastest my original '31 Model A (restored) ever went was about 75 mph... ...but that was on the open trailer!! I always pictured it back there, with it's little arms in the air, going "WWWHHHHEEEEEeeeeee!!!", like something from the CARS movie.

I went 150plus in my old soldiers Neon SRT-4. It's supposed to top out at 174. I was running out of road.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
I've only been 100. I guess I'm a lame teenager. 100 in my first car, 100 in my old '87 K20, 100 in my '96 silverado, 100 in my sisters Cobalt SS when she let me borrow it, and about 100 in my dads '67 427 Camaro with 4 passengers on a twisty road. I need to step it up a little!

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
Driving: When I was about 21-22, a buddy and I went out to the club in his 90-something BMW two door (I'm not up on them models). Anyhow I was driving home on the expressway from Las Vegas to Henderson (Nevada) we he told me to open it up... there wasn't much traffic so I did. The speedo was just about to hit 130 when I backed off. What a rush!
Riding: We recently took a trip to NE Texas to visit my lady's family. Her cousin's husband has a "built for racing" 2004 Silverado regular cab shortbed. It's got a supercharged 5.3, aftermarket heads, headers, custom exhaust, Finish Line transmission, worked suspension...very sick truck. He took me out on the open road and jumped on it. Even MORE of a rush. It broke loose at 40+mph and we got up to close to 140 in what seemed to be a couple of seconds It still had more, but we were on a two lane highway and traffic was coming. I don't think I wanted to go any faster anyhow. I'm happy to say that the fastest I've ever been was in a Chevy Truck.
