Need Help. Looking at my first 68
Hi all
I am going to look at a 68 tomorrow. Not sure what to look at in this year. I know my newer trucks but not these. According to the listing: I have a 1968 C-20 Chevy truck for sale. It has a re manufactured 350 with 4 speed on the floor. HEI Distributor Holley Carb 33" Tires New clutch New Rocker Panels New frame mounts and bushings New Ball Joints New Brakes front and Rear New Dash Pad The photos of the truck looks ok. Do these truck have manual breaks and Steering? How hard is it to conver to Power Steering on these? I am assuming drum breaks all around. What transfer case do these run? Did I leave anything out?

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
I thought C-20 was for a 3/4 ton?? Cant they be both 2 and 4 wheel drive? Some 68's had power steering, i believe, but if it doesnt its not to hard to add, i am adding it to my 67. Sounds like its been gone thru and the rust has been fixed, should be a great project. Pics would be nice and if you dont mind what is he asking for it.

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
I thought the same thing with the 33's. I kinda hope it will be a 2 wheel drive but I am ok with 4 wheel. Any suggestions on getting parts for the power steering components? Also I am assuming its manual brakes.

Very nice looking truck, i would say your in luck with a 2 wheel drive. Manual brakes!! and if that is the pick of the motor it looks to me like it has power steering!!

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
WOW i guess it depends on where you live. You could buy somthing like that around in idaho for 1000 -1500 easy. The last 69 c-20 i bought didnt have the new sheet metal that this one does but i got it for 400 bucks. Maybe some other guys will chime in. I only paid 3200 for my 72 Jimmy

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
This is the lowest and cheapest I could find in south central PA. Theres not to many offered that have the metal work done.
Not saying it was done right but at least done. Heres one more. From this one you can see the front side wheels which lead me to think its 2wheel drive. I dont think in 68 they had electronic hubs! ( no locking hub) So anything I should look for (problems) with this year. How about the gas tank in the cab? Do these rust out and if so what wre the replacements like(cost).

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
Nice, wish my 68 C20 Started out with good sheet metal. My tires were 33 inch 8 plys. Almost couldn't fit the straps on the u-haul trailer around the tires. I paid 1200 for mine, engine needed rebuilt, needed wheels and tires and cab corners, rockers and small dent in bed repaired. Its a custom camper also. Dana 60 rear. T400 and 327/ 4 barrel. Hows the interior?

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
Its a good looking truck, wouldnt worry about the gas tank, easy to clean or replace. alot of guys use a blazer tank and move it to under the bed. If you find that you need anything make sure and check out the for sale section, all these guys are awsome about putting things up for sale, and always seem to be fair priced. Good luck with your truck and let us know if you get it or not!!

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
Any posts or sites I can read up on converting to power brakes? Or is this not a concern. I know the old farm truck had manual brakes and I had to stand on it to stop. Assuming this year had drums all around?
Any other suggestions would be great !

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
I have never had any problems stopping or having to stomp on the breaks on the 67, the 72 has a break assist i think. You might be able to add somthing like that to yours. I am sure someone has done it here, I dont think there is one thing you could not find on this site when it comes to working and fixing these trucks!!!

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
your assumption is correct, drums all around and it looks like you do have power steering. you can try to talk him down from 2500 but it does look like a decent truck. got my 68 for 1800 but thats because another seller put down a non-refundable down payment of 500 for his son but the son turn down the truck then i came along.
usual rust spots are around the rockers and radiator support. surface rust is no biggie. dont know how hard it is to install power brakes as mine had it already. going to be installing disc brakes all around on my truck. i'd say go with john as its always good to have another set of eyes to look it over. from looking a the pics and if i had the money, i'd go for it.

By all means take John up on his gracious offer.I always like to have a "Devils Advocate".You are looking for a truck,John will be looking to keep the stars out of your eyes. It's easy to fall in love with a truck and overlook major problems.Brakes are easy,I mean I did it so you can.

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
All What size wheels should go on these trucks. I think the tires on it now are a little large.
I think if I would buy the truck rims and tires would be the first purchase.

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
Do the tires rub in the wheel wells? I am wondering because I need to put some tires on my Sons 69 Long Fleet and I have a good pair of 32's that would work.

Re: Need Help. Looking at my first 68
Looks like the same rims that are on (well.. wold be if it wasn't completely disasembled!) mine.
If there is no structural rust and it runs and drives that price is not out of line for our area. Good plan to take a friend who has no dog inthe fight though cause we all tend to put our rosy shades on when we are toy shopping.
