Taking the body off question

I'm taking the body off my 72 burb. Just keeping the chassis, and another board member is taking a large chunk of the body.

Ive got all the body mounting bolts loose except for the ones in the rear that go through the plywood. I believe there are four. I cant access them from under the burb...been some funky mods done under there =)

I was thinking about taking a hole saw, centering the mount bolt in the middle of the hole and just cutting all the way through the plywood. This seems like its all I should need to do to detach those bolts from holding on the body...Did I over simplify this, or should this make it good to go?

Also are there any body grounding straps back there I need to detach? I think I got all the ones in the front area. I'm using the factory books, but the assembly manual I have must be a repro because the pictures and layout suck lol.

When I lifted the body off the frame of my burb, the only thing that "hung up" were the body mounts themselves. The old rubber had squished enough to curl up around the body and frame, so it just took some easy prying while the body was slowing lifted up. I did miss a couple ground straps, but they broke pretty easy once tension was put on them.

You must have been able to get to all the bolts to your mounts first. I see what your saying about the rubber hanging on though. As far as the ground straps I want to save them and be able to reuse em.

My ground straps were pretty nasty, and I didn't mind losing them since they were in such bad shape. I've been able to replace them all with identical ones from the shops so no loss.

If you don't need the wood in the back then the hole saw method should work. Another option would be to grind the heads off of the tops of the carriage head style bolts that are still holding it together.

All the rusty bolts I had, I just used a vise grip on them. Grip on the bottom half, then bend back n' forth till they broke. They are all just low grade steel carriage bolts, so a couple bends back 'n forth busted them in half.

Never cut into the wood floor to take the body off, but only had to because I didn't know better on the proper way to disassemble it from the body.

Once I figured it out after the wood was out, I kicked myself for the extra work I created for myself. But, no big loss since my wood floor was messed up anyways.

If you can't get to them from the bottom, then a small diameter hole saw with out the drill bit is probably the best bet.

Thanks guys, I was pretty sure it would work. This shell is going to be chopped up for parts. So its cool if the wood is cut. Kind of a bummer because its in perfect shape, But then again every burb that's passed through my hands has had perfect wood back there. Maybe this stuff doesn't rot out here in the PNW.

Wish you weren't in WA. If you were closer I would have bought the whole body off you for my burb. I got a good 3/4 ton chassis, but the 2nd body is rusted badly.

Jimmy the body isnt all that. its only going to be good for chunks of parts unless you are a real metal wizard. The wood is the only thing thats perfecto...well was =) Around here you can get a much better burb to start with.

no worries. I don't really have time for it, but always looking for an excuse to not waste a perfectly good frame.

LOL...I just didnt want you being sad is all =)

I have a few extra frames myself...seems kinda wastefull. If they were 71 or 72's I could put them to use...oh well.
