How do I tell if my truck is
Still 6v or not?

Check a headlight or check the coil. Coils are usually stamped with 12V or 6V right on them. That's the fastest way. Or put a 12V battery in and turn on the headlights. After a few seconds they'll glow at about a million candlepower and then blow if they are 6V. Ask me how I know...

Look at the battery or coil they are usually labeled. If not check the battery voltage with a meter, max on 6v fully charged will be 7v. I haven't seen a six volt battery for a while but I think they just have 3 sets of cells, 12v has 6. Generator and starter might be labeled too.

Well the reason I ask is that the truck does not have headlights or tail lights in it. It does have a 12v battery in the hole but anyone could have stuck that in there.. If it is still 6v I need to change the coil to 12v along with all the lights.... Is there a regulator something I need to add or is that it?
So the ignition switch can stay the factory one? I need to get a new one for it so I just want to make sure...

im pretty sure the regulator has to change (since it regulates the voltage to slightly above 6 volts). all of the external lights, the coil, and the generator all need to be replaced. the starter and mechanical switches of any kind can stay. ingition, starter, headlight switch all are good regardless of voltage. am i missing anything guys?

Yep the regulator has to be changed, switchs are ok, don't forget the wiper motor if it's 6 volt,(Vac wipers are ok ha ha) the starter motor will usually be ok , just cranks over a bit faster, i ran a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt car for years and it was fine

Is it the sending unit or is it the gauge? I've always heard it was the gauge but I guess basic V=IR should tell me the sending unit may need the love...

It should start and run with a 6V regulator but it won't charge. Regulator will cut it down to no more than about 8V charging. If you crank it all the way up, 9V.
