Inline 6 Intake / Exhaust Question

I posted this question on the engine page - thought I might get more input if I posted here as well . . .

I've got a '65 suburban with a 230 L6. I'm ignorant on these motors - I admit that up front.

On an inline 6 (194/230/292) the intake and exhaust manifolds are bolted together. If I wanted to make an exhaust change (headers, etc.) without the expense of replacing intake and carb at the same time - is it possible? Can you run stock intake / aftermarket exhaust or vice-versa?

If so, what would I need to do to make it work?

Yes, all of the stock intakes are bolted together with three bolts. You can swap intakes and exhausts back and forth. Different brands of manifolds might require headers though.

Yes, I did this a LONG time ago. I put on a Headman header and kept the stock intake and 1 bbl carb. The headers came with everything that I needed except for the exhaust tubing from the reducer to the mufflers and tailpipes.

Thanks for the link - I had been looking at Hedman headers form LMC. I like the price of Summit's better.

Now I've just got to decide if this old 6 cylinder is worth the effort.

This shorty head was not offered back when I did mine. I would have rather had them...

I went with the Pertronix and not sure if it is a major improvement but seems to run better.

Clifford Performance also offers 6 cylinder stuff.

I bolted a set of Langdons cast iron headers on my 65 with a 230 a month ago. Next is an Offy single quad as soon as I come up with a carb. I was planning on a Holley 390 cfm but have decided to look for an older Rochester 4 jet which should bolt on without an adaptor plus look a little more period correct.

i'm gunna run those cast iron ones on my 292 from Langdon's, i've heard good things about his stuff. check out his site langdonsstovebolts.com and listen to the sound clip he has of his split manifold sixer, it sounds awesome!!

Thanks for all the info - I knew I was coming to the right place.

hb32 - FYI - '68OrangeSunshine posted his set-up over on my post in the engine section. Here's what he did for a classic looking carb;

"an Edelbrock 1404 500 CFM 4Bbl [clone of the Carter AFB] on an Offy intake and Clifford long tube headers."

11echo - I was considering HEI - good to hear from some folks who have already done it.

thanks again everybody - this helps a great deal. It's nice to get some answers without having to take everything apart first.

Hey Shaky what carb are you using on your Clifford? I used a Edelbrock 1404 manual chock and have been happy with it. Just a note if your going to lower your truck or bag it the long headers are not the best idea, with short headers you can run the pipes through the frame just something to think about...Vernski

It's a Holley 390 with manual choke.

No north/south issues. It took awhile messing with jets and power valves and springs to get it working right since it was probably set-up for a V8 out of the box. It pulled strong when the secondaries opened up and it was up on the cam.
