700 r-4 converter lock up

I just picked up a 700r4 out of a 1986 Chevy caprice classic that was behind a 305,I want to put it in my 64 step behind my built 350,I have the complete car,so will have other parts. My question is,do I have to rewire trans with a hot wire for the converter lockup,or should I just run it?Tx Firefighter posted a quick rewire does this work for you? Thanks

I bought a Painless wiring kit for the 700r4. I loved having the extra gear and lockup converter.

When I was still driving mine it had a Prostick. I had to swap out the plate to go from a three speed auto to a foer speed auto.

Re: 700 r-4 converter lock up

My suggestion would be a B&M Megashifter, Quicksilver, or Prostick possibly a ProRatchet. I Megashifter (ratchet) in a S10 Blazer with a small block and 700r4 that is built (rev manual valve body, gears, vette servo, 3500 stall converter). I like the ratchet shifter in it. But it is being redone and are switching to a ProRatchet. Just my two pennies.

I'm still running the old z-gate from my previous 400, I just have no way of holding it in low gear. love the manual lock up, I think I have a TCI kit off of e-bay, didn't spend big bucks. haven't seen Tx Firefighter's diagram but wouldn't hesitate to try it.

I think the star shifter is 3 speed only: http://www.fastpts.com/cgi-bin/hazel...mshifters.html

On my Mega Shifter I had to remove a couple of pins & swap out the plate that shows you what gear your in.

Re: 700 r-4 converter lock up

You need to be able to lock up the converter. It will create to much heat if you don't. Just wire it and use a toggle switch. I did that for years and I liked it as I could control the lock up myself.

Did it require any fabrication? What year model van did it come out of?

These columns come from 70's vans. I think all the way up to 1979 or 80 are the same. I welded two nuts to the bottom of the column so I could bolt it to the coliumn/hand brake bracket. I also used the lower column from a 73 and up truck.

I actually like those older van columns. Many don't have the ugly "hump" on them the way the car columns do.

My last car had one out of a early or mid 70s full size GM car

Re: 700 r-4 converter lock up

How do you tell if the lockup is working properly? On mine at low speeds I feel a clunk that feels like a downshift on a manual transmission (it's a stage 2 700r4) Is that the lockup releasing?

Re: 700 r-4 converter lock up

With the Painless kit the lock up work fine on the highway. My 406 has a big cam so around town when the converter locks up the trucks starts to buck and jerk. This is at speeds under 55. To solve this I installed a toggle switch to lock the converter up when I choose to.

Re: 700 r-4 converter lock up

Is there anyway to use the original Automatic Steering column thats set up for a three speed automatic when installing a overdrive tranny like a 200R4?

Yes you can. I am using a 3 speed auto column from a van. It would be a 70's van column.

Chevy Fleetside,
I guess that the drive position would actually be the overdive position and you just wouldn't be able to manually shift the tranny into L1, would that be right?

You can't lock up in all gears. it shouldnt lock in 1st and if you forget to turn it off you will figure it out real fast when it shifts into 2nd..

Re: 700 r-4 converter lock up

I guess I could make the steering column from the caprice work, just some fab work, and linkage, and would leave more leg room. Also run wiring with switch right on shifter arm.

Re: 700 r-4 converter lock up

B & M makes a great pull and play lockup controller that's allows you to manually adjust the lockup. I put one in when I installed my 700R4 I think at the time it cost about $150 but it was worth it.

You can use your 3 speed colume (automatic) you just need to get your self a 4 speed indicator to mount on your colume in place of the 3 speed. I used the original powerglide colume and shift linkage all the way up though my 200R4.

Re: 700 r-4 converter lock up

I used a kit from Jegs that uses vacuum to control the lock up. Heres the link: http://www.jegs.com/i/TCI/890/376600...oductId=748599
