smog pump froze up
finally got the new HEI distributor in today. fired up the old '73 for the first time since the title has been in my name (finally!). while it was running, there was an awful smell and a little bit of smoke coming from the belt. turns out the smog pump running on the same belt as the alternator froze up and wouldnt budge and was burning the belt.
will it hurt anything removing the smog pump altogether? i'd like to get rid of it anyhow and make some room in the engine compartment. seems like I may need a shorter belt. any input is greatly appreciated. |

Re: smog pump froze up
as long as you dont need it for inspection you can remove it.. you can cut the tubes by the exhaust and block the hoses up by rolling them aand remove the belt

Re: smog pump froze up
Ya, I junked it from my '88. But if you don't need to get your '73 smoged in CA then just junk the dang thing.

Re: smog pump froze up
SO much better. junked some parts and made some room. Can't believe how much more access there is to the radiator hoses and fuel pump. by the way, I would consider this the greasiest part of the entire truck. the smog pump bracket had a solid inch of caked up gunk

Re: smog pump froze up
yeah people dont take care of their trucks and they get a layer of grease and chunks of it all over the motor. I can tell you horror stories of the grease on stuff when i worked in the taxi company 20 something years ago
