Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

I recently put some new mufflers on my truck, and I'm happy with their sound but the passenger side tail pipe is at a downward angle now (previous exhaust was fully welded, I cut off old mufflers and clamped new ones on, passenger side was welded at a funny angle and now it's changed the tailpipe angle) so I've been thinking about cutting the tail pipes off right behind the mufflers and possibly putting turndowns on it, but I can't make up my mind. Someone wanna pitch in some ideas?

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

You could always dump them out the sides in front of the rear wheels.

My plans eventually, but I'm looking for a quick fix right now lol.

And someone told me, since I have aluminum wheels, that having it exit in front of the tires will warp my aluminum wheels. Never heard that before but I wanna make sure before I do it.

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

if you can dump the exhaust out the side. I had turndowns under the truck and it sounded funny as the sound vibrated off the bottom of the truck and off the ground

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

Both my 90 and my 84 have the exhaust cut off at the muffler. The exhaust has a drone at hiway speeds but if a little noise doesnt bother you it isnt that bad. If you have a sliding back window you will get some exhaust in the cab if sitting at a red light.

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

FWIW, I hate driving behind people with turndowns in a parking lot. They kick up dirt and gravel with their exhaust at low speeds.

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

I had mine dumped and it covered rear axle in blackness... perhaps the carb was a bit out of tune, but none the less.

Mine sounded great...

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

I prefer full length tailpipes that are 'well placed'.

The noise level w/dumped exhaust is much worse in the cab (especially on older trucks that don't have the interior insulation/plastics to help isolate exterior sounds. I drove board member 'Jonboy's' truck back to his house after dropping it last weekend. We were forced to cut off the tail pipes of his newly installed 2.5" dual Flowmaster exhaust because the kick-up over the rearend housing was hitting solid. The truck was much louder & even on that short 20min drive, it got 'old' real fast..... As mentioned, it also kicks up a lot of dust/debris from the ground (if the truck is low enough) which can make the underside a mess as well as anything behind you (something to remember @ local cruises/car shows).

I've always preferred the quiet vehicle that hauls arse vs. the loudest thing in the parking lot that's a stock motor w/dumped exhaust.

lol well I didn't wanna chance it, I can't afford new ones atm.

I cut it off about 6 inches behind the mufflers, ~8-10 inches in front of the rear end. It doesn't sound bad, but it lost a lot of the rasp it had to it with full tail pipes and its REAL bassy @ idle. Not sure how I like it, gonna try some turndowns and see how I like that.

It will ruin the finish of an aluminum wheel if you're running cats.

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

First it won't hurt your rims it won't be that close.

Second I have run turn downs on 5 different vehicles and 3 of them were Tahoes. With a good muffler (50 series flow or magnaflow) cab noise is not that bad. I just installed a new cat and a magnaflow single in and dual out with 2 1/4" turndowns and I love the way it sounds but I don't like a loud exhaust. Mine rumbles at an idle and when it is going down the road it is not bad at all but it dumps right before my rear end and the turn downs are 30 degrees. there is my .02

Ya x2 I have never heard that before either! I like headers with exhaust I have had full exhaust come out behind the tires. I also have glasspacks with turn downs that are under the truck and they sound awesome a lil loud when I am on it though

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

Ive driven a friend's truck w/ the turn downs right after the muffler, it was a newer gmc (like 03).. but its a z71 so it sits up higher than these trucks.. i think it sounds kool and it does drone at constant speeds but it never gets annoying

Re: Dumping Exhaust Under Truck?

My duals are dumped behind the rear axle and out the side. I added stainless turn downs to keep the exhaust carbon off the fenders. I have a dump box, so my exhaust must exit well short of the rear bumper, or the exhaust tips will be knocked off when the box is in the full up position.
