Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

I am in the process of installing a mild 454 into my 86 Silverado. I also want to lower it ~4" in front with a flip in back at some point. After a little searching I have found that the summit brand (flowtech I think) full length headers I was planning on using will hang below the frame rails. Are there any 3/4 length bb headers that work in our trucks?

There are "shorty" headers that will work but I refuse to pay triple the price for half the header.

I looked at some Camaro headers side by side on the floor with truck headers. I'm not convinced the Camaro headers will work without serious mods.

Sanderson BB8's will work perfect. They are 3/4 length headers for 73-87 BB trucks. I have them on mine, and like them a lot.

I ordered hooker 3/4 length for a late 70-mid 80's bbc camaro and they worked great.

Do you happen to know the model number of the headers you used? I was looking at camaro BB headers on summit and found some hedman shorties (68610) that people say work but didn't see any 3/4 length hookers.

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

new to the site and was wondering if there was any clearance issues with hedman shorty headers on an 86 c10 with a 454 in it? Is there any other mods that need to be done?

I used chevelle headers on mine. They fit nice and dont hang much lower than the frame rails.

so was there any interference with motor mounts or the lower control arm or the frame?

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

I had to cut a small amount off of the upper rear corner of the clam shell motor mount on the drivers side, and relocate the emergency brake cable bracket on the bottom of the frame rail. They were easy mods and didn't take much to do. No a arm or any other clearance problems.

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

Forgot to add, if it wasn't for them having 3 1/2 inch collectors I wouldn't have had to relocate the emergency brake cable bracket. with a 3 inch collector I don't think you will have to.

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

not 100% sure I think they are headman. 2 1/8 primaries with 3 1/2 collectors. I know they aren't hookers. I bought them used, the person I bought them from said he had them on a 70 chevelle. My truck has 2 inch drop spindles with 1 coil cut.

i will be about the same drop how much clearance does your exhaust have from the ground and is it tucked into the frame

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

I have 'used' Chevelle headers from an unknown manufacturer on my dually w/a bbc. Full length, 1.75" primary, & 3" collectors. They are about 1.5" above the bottom of the frame rail (which is slightly taller on a dually but they would still work just fine on a 1/2 ton). I had to clearance the motor mount shell to ensure .250" clearance from everything & trimmed the lip of the frame rail where it drops under the cab (again, just to ensure a full .250" clearance everywhere). I tried them because I used Chevelle headers on my 67 & they cleared well. Much cheaper vs 'custom' headers....

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

i have an '86 with 3" drop coils and 4" kit in the rear. i went all out and got the Hooker SuperComps on my truck. they fit very nice. make sure you get the 1 7/8". the 2" primaries hit the control arms and hung way too low. the first setup had some old headers off a 1968 camaro that fit decent, but the new engine needed more bling!

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

Someone on here recommended chevelle headers to me... I think the hooker part number is HKR-2455. I bought them as they are suppose to tuck in up high and fit great.. I havent got them installed yet, but the person said they fit excellent. 2" primary, 3 1/2 collector.

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

A 4 inch drop up front shouldn't cause any clearance issues. I have a 4 inch drop on mine right now and it does fine with full lengths. Tall speed bumps are the only issue and with some planning are no issue.
Most muscle cars I've been in had some road rubbing love

One would think that header manufacturers would bring us more choices on headers for these trucks instead of just a handfull

Re: Big Block in square body, what headers on lowered truck?

I allready have headers on it. I have a 3 inch drop spindles with some lo pro tires. I plan on putting bigger tires back on but will put drop it even more by cutting the coils. im also running a 454 so I just want to make sure I keep my exhaust as high up into the frame as possable. I drive it kinda hard and I dont want to worry about dragging my exhaust off
