Grandparents gave me a birthday present!!!

This was my Great Grandfathers truck. I never knew him and never knew he had this truck until we started clearing out his estate. The truck has been sitting at my parents house for a month or so now and I have been telling my grandpa (who now owns the estate) that I was going to buy it from him. He said that was fine and take as much time as I needed paying him for it.

Well, yesterday was my birthday. Today I get a card from my grandparents in the mail that says if I am interested in restoring the truck, its mine! Happy Birthday! I'm still speechless! Never crossed my mind that they would do something like this for me.

Anyway.. Details.. 1969 Chevy C-10 Longbed. 307 motor. 74,000 original miles. No rust whatsoever, windshield wipers still work, body is straight, and the a/c even still blows cold!

My brother threw some wheels on it that he had on his 61' that help out a little. It's a terrible cell phone photo but I will get some better pictures when I have time.

Re: Grandparents gave me a birthday present!!!

Remember to always keep it running; don't tear it down for more than one weekend or you may end up never getting it back together. It's easy to lose your motivation when you can't drive your truck. keep it running and you cna always enjoy it. Also, don't sell it, unless it's to someone else in the family, it's got much sentimental value attached to it. Good luck. Nice ride.

This is very good advise.

My son has fixed up a lot of old trucks and the only one he has lost motivation in is the one he tore down completely. He has stalled out and seems to have lost focus.

He is now working on getting a '70 Chevelle roadworthy.

My '67 I have kept in running condition while I gather parts to rebuild it.

Good luck and enjoy your project. If you have any questions don't hesitate to post them, there are a bunch of very helpful people here I have found.

Wink Re: Grandparents gave me a birthday present!!!

Thanks everyone. I am definately super stoked about it. And don't worry, I cannot forsee any situation that I would sell this truck. It will be in the family for a very long time.

As far as plans for the truck.. I have big plans, I know not everyone will agree with me, but I want the truck to feel, ride, and perform like a modern truck.

On the list for this summer is.. ECE's 4/6 drop and disc brake conversion. Wheels, Tires, Update Interior, add carpet etc. body and paint. It will be a daily driver so I think I am going to go with a flat color for ease of maintinence. Mechanically it is pretty sound. Need to rebuild carb. and just ordered a new master cylinder. Runs great otherwise. I will probably do an LS1 swap in a year or so. I apologize in advance to the "traditionalists"

A lot just depends on how much money I can scrape up this summer.

My brother is a custom painter/body guy so everything will be done right and rather quickly, I have a paint booth and his shop at my disposal.. Like I said, my only obsticle is cash..

Re: Grandparents gave me a birthday present!!!

I agree with you, I just got a 68 and it is going to be my primary ride so I want it to drive well to. The lucky thing is that if you replace the front end steering components it will drive almost better than new. (In my opinion.) Anyway, my truck will look stock except for the wheels but I will be adding power steering and ac. Suprisingly the drum brakes feel fine since I have a booster so no upgrade there for me. The final thing I will be doing is putting shoulder belts in.

Lastly, I won't be lowering my truck but that is just because it would make it less functional for me. But that is just my own take, we are all into these trucks for different reasons which is what makes America great. What a great present for you! Make their decision the right one. =)

Re: Grandparents gave me a birthday present!!!

Very nice start you have there. And no need to apologize to anyone. It is your truck, do what you want with it. We have all kinds/types of trucks on here from mild to wild.
Welcome and keep the pics coming.

Nice grandparents. At least they can see you enjoy the gift. Most of my relatives won't part with anything, then after they are dead and gone, may the fights begin as to who get what. Like an other boardmember wrote, give your grandparents a nice hug, and throw one in for me, I like them already..............Flat67

Re: Grandparents gave me a birthday present!!!

From another who inherited from his Great Grandfather, Congrats Cherish the truck and never sell it. My 67 is one of the few things I have in my life to remind me of a great man who was a huge impact on my life, and there is no price in the world that would take this truck.
