timing gear drive (if you have one i need your help)

I got my engine running but the gear drive i put in is the loud one, on the first start i was hearing just a small bit of wine but not much at all, would the gap from the cam button to the timing cover play any effective with the wine ?????
I had a hell of a time with the cam button I had to grind off like 3/4 of it and hit the cover with a hammer just to get the cover on. I know it it calls for like 00.5 to 0.10 of free play from the button to the cover and i have like zero.
any help would be great

No, end-play will not have any effect upon the noise. It actually comes from the shape of the gear teeth and how they relate to each other. Is it possible that your block was ever "line bored" or even honed? That would put the gears closer together. I'm pretty sure that they make special gears for that application though.

BTW, if the end-play is too tight, it can be distructive to the thrust bearing itself.

OK ,Thanks ill have to pull it all apart and hit it with a bigger harmer to make more room. I am running out of cam button to grind off lol

i think there might b cab covers designed with a relief for that cambutton clearance

Mine had a thrust bearing that went behind the cam gear use a little grease to hold it in place it likes to fall down and throw off the adjustment. I also used a aluminum timing cover that i drilled a 1/4 hole and ran a tap so i could use a hardened set screw to make very accurate cam end play adjustment. Just use some red loctite on the set screw to prevent leaks and to keep the set screw tight

What brand is it? I just put an Edelbrock gear drive in my motor, and did not have to grind the cam button at all. I did have to dimple the cover just a hair to keep the idler gear within maximum play. I have a pic of it on my page if you want to check it out.

I've bought 3 or 4 pete jackson noisy gear drives & have installed several sets for others. I've never had to grind a thrust button or dimple even a stock cover. If you ground 3/4 of the thrust button away, & need to grind more , or beat your cover .. More.. You've got some other problem. The one in my 82 dd is in it's third motor, & has well over 400,000 miles on it. They just don't wear like a chain. But i can only go by pete jackson gear drives, cause thats the only brand i've ever used. Good luck john

I got the cheap cat gear drive. Its making more nose now I put some lube on it as i was installing it and now after a short drive down the road and back its starting to buzz as it should. Ill still have to look for a smaller cam button or a different timing cover

Mine all came with a thrust button. I'd be willing to bet you've got the wrong button for your gear drive. Their not all created equal. john

I was just looking online and you can get the pvc ones and a long or a short one I think I am going to get a new one Just to be safe.

we must be talking about different things. I've never seen or heard of a pvc gear drive or cam button. Mine had a little thrust bearing in it. We are talking about the little button that goes in the hole of your cam gear to keep your cam from walking.. Right?? John

Why don't you just call (or look up on the internet) the manufacturer of the gear drive you have & see witch button they recomend for compatabuility with your setup. Most of them have a tech line. (i'm not very good at guessing) . Pete jackson gear drives are made to fit under a stock cover with no modifications. john
