Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
Ok, so I had a guy come buy the center link on my suburban, and he looked at the axle, and said it looked like it had a Posi tag on it. I am interested to know if there is a tag that denotes it as a posi, or if there is another way to tell? If I have to open it up, will it look the same as a rear posi carrier? It's a D44 axle, appears stock, but I know the rear appeared to have a gear change.

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
More than likely, the tag will tell you the gear ratio. See what the tag says for sure. Maybe you will get lucky and the tag will read "use posi lube only"

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
I don't think they ever did it from the factory....I would pull the cover and have a look. It could use some fresh lube anyway.

Ok, got some pictures and the numbers off it. It appears that it might be a Posi

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
I think front posi was an option... not sure that is factory, though.

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
Jack up the front without it being locked in. Turn a wheel, if the other wheel turns the same way, it's a posi. If it turns the other way, it isn't. That's the way I always tell. If it is a posi, you can have someone hold one wheel while you turn the other, to see how tight the unit is. I know on my 9" rear, it takes quite a bit of force to get the posi to slip. Good luck

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
I would try that, but it's on a trailer and strapped down and sitting on an incline, so I can't really jack it up. I am hoping someone can tell by the pictures.

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
Ok, little more research, and it seems like it is a POWR-LOK limited slip for a D44 as seen on this site:
http://www.shopih.com/POWRLOK-D44-p-AR.html And here too (near the bottom): http://www.vernco.com/powr-lok/ Time to figure out how to get it out.

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
According to the numbers on the ring gear it's a 4:10 ratio.

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
It's a posi, power-lok, has a clutch pack and it is rebuildable. Requires the posi-lube additive also.

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
Yeah, it was from the central part of NY in the snow belt by Syracuse. I believe the truck was used for heavy long haul towing, as the rear had the gears replaced with 5.13's and the front was locked out with the transfer case. It also had cruise, trailer brakes, and an extra large fuel tank under the middle seat.
Good thing I didn't try and drive it as is, as I may have tried to put it into four wheel and had an issue.

Re: Front Posi Axle. How to tell?
Yep, that's a Powr-lok. I had a 1970 K20 that had a lot of early 1969 parts on it from the factory, and it had the same set up in the front. I wish I would have kept that drivetrain now. That truck would go almost anywhere.
