Used Rad Installed!

Picked up a 3 row rad, intake and Quadrajet for $85. Went to install the rad, stock hoses on the 283 were too big. Bought some Gates rubber adapters and put the "new" rad in. Working good!

I don't know if you can tell from the pics put the old one was on it's last legs. I don't think it owed anyone anything though. The old one was a little shorter (from end to end) so the "new" one fit much better on the rad clamps.

One of the few repairs I've done that didn't lead into something a lot bigger!!

Don't forget to add a fan shroud.

Yes-I'm keeping my eye out for one. Definitely a safety issue!

Re: Used Rad Installed!

I just pulled mine out from my 70 Suburban. Not sure how much shipping is from Charlotte, NC - but it's yours if you want it.

I can take some picks of tomorrow if you want.

Wow-I really appreciate that. I checked out your build thread. Love those 'burbs. Here in the "rust belt", there is a real shortage of parts for these trucks. Don't want to put you out-I just started looking but thanks a lot for the offer. There's gotta be something up here somewhere.

The nicest people are on this forum. I picked up a fuel sender and rad overflow bottle the same way.

Good luck with your build.

not so much a safety issue as a cooling issue

Thanks.

With the "new" rad on, the truck is running cooler than before. I'm sure you're right that the shroud will increase air flow (and increase cooling) but it does look like a potential finger-biter without any shroud. On my Astro and Caprice, you can't even see the fan blades for the shrouds.

Re: Used Rad Installed!

The fan shroud is not a safety issue, it's a cooling issue. It allows the fan to suck a much greater amount of air through the radiator. It will cool MUCH more efficiently with the proper shroud installed. You fan should be half in and half out of the shroud once it's installed.

Re: Used Rad Installed!

Thanks for that info 71swb4x4. I just got a four core rad for my six pin, I got the v8 shroud and hopefully the right spacer. Rad $35.00. Presure tested, boiled and paint $75.00 $110.00 total. Sorry and thanks for jumping in. Nick
