When I replaced the head on my '69 with a 292 I seem to remember putting the pushrods in the block before (carefully) putting the cylinder head on. Hopefully there's an easier way for you!

that's fine if you are changing the head. What about a broken push rod?

I'm thinking maybe pull the motor mounts and drop the from down about an inch.

I just thought of something I will try tomorrow. Pull the lifter out and drop the pushrod down and pull it out the side. Just tried it, no go.
