My Custom Center Console

Been building this all weekend. Took a while to finish because all I had was a jigsaw to use. It's not perfect but I think it turned out fairly well considering I didn't have a table saw. Also ordered a TView T92VGA Monitor to put toward the front of it. It's all touchscreen to plug my laptop into. I'm going to have it upholstered after the monitor gets here and I get it all set up the way I want.










Here's the hinge's for the top piece. My laptop is going to sit in here that's why I have fans. Gotta keep the air circulating.




What do you guys think? I still have a front piece to build but I have to wait for the monitor to get here.

Thanks! It sits 16" high. Feels perfect with where my seats sit.

Nice to see someone else take the dive on building a center consol...yours looks great !!!! since you used a heavy board like that take a sander and take ALL the square edges off it and give the upolstry stuff a try I did mine ..not perfect but it looks good..the material is pretty cheap just be sure to put at least a 1/4" pad under the materail

If you have access to a router with a quarter round bit, it will make the edges round not square and look nicer. Its easier than using a sander and will come out looking even. A half round bit would look even nicer but the screws are too close to the edge and the bit will eat too much of the wood and the screw head as well. Of course this all depends on what material your gonna use, Carpet, trunk liner, vinyl, etc. and if your gonna use padding or not. Just my .02.

also look what I did under mine...looks like you have enough air for an 8 or 10" thumper..and that will keep the air moving under your lap top...lol

I already have 4 15's for my thumpin. Lol. Thanks for the comments. I think I might try the router bit on the corners. Maybe I'll try my own upholstery, I just don't want a lot of seams.

looking at your console and the shape your going o need 2 seems one on each top edge...if you put a bead on it it will go very quick and easy..the material cost will be pennies so if it doesn't come out well you can always take it to someone...seeing what a good job you did on the box the rest will be easy..if you want any info on how I did mine pm me and I'll give you some pointers I learned...

Hottrucks and the $300 dollars I got quoted to have it upholstered for me talked me into giving it a shot myself. Here's the next step! Got 1/4 foam all around except for the back and in the laptop pocket. Waiting for the adhesive to dry up a little before wrapping. I have some material I'm going to practice with and keep on for a while. After I get a couple practice runs in and a little brush up with the sewing machine I'm going to go pickup some synthetic leather that matches my seats. I plan on doing the synthetic leather with red stitching around the edges. Should look good!

Anyway, here's the pics of it wrapped in 1/4" foam.

Well I've finished. Now I know why it's so expensive to have things upholstered. :p Pain in my butt. I guess for a first try at upholstery it's not to bad but It could be A LOT better. Eventually I will have it done professionally, but for now this works. It fits cups pretty good, it is a tight fit, but I can fit a 44oz. in there.

It has dirt and sawdust all over it. I'll wait for it to dry then give it a vacuum tomorrow.

well I think it looks good I know that after I did mine I felt the same way...If or when I do it again it will come out better....but by the time you sped $300 on material you'll be good at it and will have learned so much the next project will be a breeze

The long part is the front of it. I have buckets from an '06 GTO. I will get pictures of it in the truck in a bit. I'm waiting on my 9.2" TouchScreen to show up so I can build a piece for it. The screen is going in the front of the skinny part just under the dash.

Edit: I'm also going to pickup some vinyl and practice sewing it all. I don't think sewing it will be to hard. I'll make a template that's about 1/2" taller everywhere then cut the material to that, sew it all inside out then slip it on. I'm sure it sounds easier than it's going to be but practice makes perfect right?

when you cut the material place it over your console backwards and trace it that will be your sew line when its inside out..works great...your going to love it I can't wait to see it in the truck...

your going to want to step it up on the lid foam too (ask me how I know) I ended up with 1.5" dense foam on mine and its still a bit thin on the corner where you rest your elbow....since its just the lid wait till you get it in the truck you may want it to be a bit higher anyway to make it more comfortable...

Got it in my truck. Not to bad but I think everyone nit picks their own projects to much. Thanks for all the tips Hottrucks! I actually like the height as it is. A little higher might not be to bad, but being 6' 3" my arms are long. It will probably be a while before I get it done in synthetic leather with red stitch to match the shift boot.

the funny part is your GTO seats look just like my BMW seats but your door panels are kick Azz I may hvae to steal that idea.... I wanted cup holders in mine but my amp is under the flat spot on mine and figured it wasn't a good idea..my next thing is to make up a set of kick panels....but its getting pretty black inside as it is....
