Help on upgrading 2 disk brakes on my 68

Need help on upgrading to put on power brakes and disk brakes on the front of my 68 step side...Do I need to buy the kit or is there another way to do it cheaper. I would like to stick with 6 bolts.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

IMO... the only way to go is with ECE. So far I'm not aware of an aftermarket producer of 6-lug discs at your local parts store. I went with the kit, and it took any/all guess work out of the upgrade as I had everything I needed, minus bearing grease.

Someone told me CPP sells just 6 lug rotors seperatly to fit on later spindler (73-87) not sure if this is true, you could just junkyard the swap over that way and then buy the rotors from them, maybe a little more work but may save some $$$$ in the long run, like I said though someone one this site told me a week or two ago that they sold them but havent had a chance to check for sure yet

Keep your truck all 68. The kit is realy not that expencive when you consider what you will have to do to mount lator model suspention under your truck. Let alone remember what you did years from now if you need to replace things. The kits are relitively inexpencive, bolt in, and don't require you to change everything under your truck to fit. By the time you pay for everything you will need to change out to used parts it is nearly cheaper to have used a kit. WES

What is so difficult about swaping later model stuff? Unbolt stock a arms and bolt on later model. Swap tierods and centerlink as well. You get better balljoint design. Most say better ride ans steering.
Makes a great time to replace what are likely all worn out on a 40 year old truck. Balljoints control arm bushings, tie rod enss, etc...
I am doing this now on my daily driver.

Re: Help on upgrading 2 disk brakes on my 68

Didn't say it was difficult. I just said to keep the truck all 68. Easier to remember that way and if you sell the truck in the future, the future owner won't have a problem ordering parts that are wrong. I have been called out to a Goodyear allignment shop because they ordered parts from me and they thought they were wrong. It turns out the parts were right, but what was under the truck was wrong. The customer was out his truck untill I figured out what he had and changed him back to what was right. WES

Not true. 63-70 ball joints, and tie rod ends are less expencive than lator model stuff. WES

Re: Help on upgrading 2 disk brakes on my 68

Just checked cpp does list 6 lug rotors that fit 70-87 disc spindles. List price is 129 pair. I would be willing to bet these are an or replacement rotor for something.
I am going to check the parts catologs for a 6 lug rotor.

Re: Help on upgrading 2 disk brakes on my 68

I see. Makes sense.
I guess a lot depends on you intentions with the truck, resto, weekend cruiser, hot rod, show truck, etc.
Mplans are for a great all around daily driver. So budget minded upgrades are the plN for me. I am keeping the truck fairly original appearing, but improving on the items that will give me improved ride, handling, etc, on my daily commute. Until a couple months ago when i pulled the engine and trans out i was driving this daily even in a foot of snow and plan to continue to for years to come.
