Power Steering Pump Bracket?
Someone wanna tell me how you get the power steering pump out of the bracket? I'm taking the mortor out for a re-build and I went to take the P/S pump off and found that there is: One stud with a nut through the slotted adjustment part of the bracket, One stud with a nut that fits in a slot on the bottom rear of the bracket and One bolt that goes through a hole in the bottom front of the bracket. The bolt and nut at the bottom are off but the pump will not come up due to the stud in the slot on top. I took the whole thing (bracket, pump and all) off by taking two bolts out of the front of the bracket and one out of the rear. The one in the rear was kinda tucked in behind/under the motor mount and was a total PITA to get out so I can't imagine that it's going to be very much fun to re-install that way. What am I missing? Oh yeah...it's a 350. Thanks, Dwayne

Re: Power Steering Pump Bracket?
Did you remove the pulley? I think there are 4 bolts under there. I think in the back there's 1 bolt and 1 studbolt (new technical term). The studbolt is a pain because the hex head is about half normal thickness and tends to get rounded off. Grind a socket flat and degrease the mess before trying to take it off.
Of course my recent experience is with a 71 Camaro, but I seem to recall the 72 truck was similar. The 72 seems to have a bracket setup from an 85 since the alt is on the passenger side and I don't think it belongs there. I could be wrong. Last edited by 72lb4x4; 06-24-2010 at 10:39 PM. |

Re: Power Steering Pump Bracket?
No, I did not remove the pulley. The pump is loose from the bracket from just the 3 nuts/bolt I mentioned but it still won't come out. The bracket is actually two pieces and if I take the last bolt out of the brackets the two pieces will come apart and the pump will be out but putting it back that way is gonna be a major PITA.

Re: Power Steering Pump Bracket?
What's stopping it from coming out and what's it coming out of? My impression was it came out of the truck along with the brackets as an assembly and its on your bench. Of course if you want to get the motor out you'd probably just set the pump and brackets aside so my reading skills must be lacking.
Both mine came out of the truck with the brackets but they varied over the years and you haven't mentioned which year setup you have or what year truck its in. |

Re: Power Steering Pump Bracket?
Sorry...'69 C20 with 350/400. Yeah I got it out on the bench so of course I could just put it back in reverse order but the one bolt under/behind the motor mount is gonna be hell. I was hopeing I could put the brackets on while the motor was out and install the pump after the motor was sitting in the frame.

Re: Power Steering Pump Bracket?
I think 70 changed to the bolt holes in the front of the heads so we're seing two different setups. My pump has about 3" of air between it and the front of the motor mount.

Re: Power Steering Pump Bracket?
Yeah, the bolts in my P/S bracket go into the block instead of the head. I have that much space between the pump and the motor mount but the bracket goes back that far.

Re: Power Steering Pump Bracket?
I had mine on and off several times to make adjustments- each time with it on the brackets. The back bolt was a PIA each time.
