HEI Distributor
Going to make the move from points etc. to HEI. Would like to go with MSD. Seems like I have a choice between built in coil or external coil. The built in coil looks like a fatty. The big block sits in place of the small block. Shortened the drive shaft and moved the transmission etc. to fit the big guy. Can't tell if I will have firewall interference issues or not. Would like your input before I plunk down a chunk of change. I want the install as close to plug and play as I can get.

Before you spend a bunch of money on a new one go to a junkyard and look for a cheap one to see if it will fit. May save you some frustration later on-- and a few bucks...

I bought the pertronix III Dist and coil - replaced my MSD unit and it works much better
Has the built in multi strike from idle up and a built in rev limiter I bought the small cap with ext coil - to replace the all built in large cap HEI

Thanks to all. After taking another look I believe I will have to go to the small cap with ext coil. Just not much room between existing distributor and the firewall, don't hink I can make the turn without some serious wrenching. Will check the yards for any decent used stuff first. Believe I did this awhile back and not much around these parts.

pertronix(made in usa) makes a really nice billet smallcap hei that uses an external coil and looks like a standard points type// tho a bit pricy i've used a few times and you cant beat the looks and ease to set it up
IMO msd is overly complicated with tons of gimmickery stuff that really has no real advantage for a normal streetdriven vehicle/// lots to figure out lots to go wrong lots of wires and generally not worth the effort loads of features that r never used during the life of the unit

I've just ordered the Pertonix ignitor kit to convert my twin point mallory as I have the same problem, stock HEI just won't fit in. Should be here tomorrow and then I need to fit it, picking up their Flamethrower coil to go with it too.
