big trip.
Here's my 85 GMC 4x4, my uncle bought it new in 1985 and parked it for good in 1995. He gave it to me a while ago and i finally picked it up. I stashed it at my buddys shop and have been working on it little bits at a time, So far its got this done to it...
Carb rebuilt twice, i think its good this time. New cap, rotor, plugs and wires. New water pump. new power steering pump. New radiator hoses. After market gauge set for oil, water and volts. New tires. So far i have driven it down his private drive and back a couple times no more than 100 yards long, Some time this week im going to go throw this carb on it and see if it makes the drive from Las Cruces NM to Ruidoso Nm. Its about 2 and a half hours. |

Re: big trip.
I didn't vote because...... You really need to drive it around town first. It needs to get up to operating temp., starting, stopping, etc...... Do this BEFORE you jump in to go on your 2.5 hour trip! I would think you'd be OK, but you need to check everything!

Re: big trip.
Definitely check your fluids, even the radiator (knowing you just replaced hoses). Motor, tranny and differential.
Like the others, I'd drive it around town for a bit, to make sure it doesn't try to overheat, no slipping gears, no major oil leaks. With those in place, I'd make the trip myself! Ruidoso is so beautiful. I keep trying to talk my wife into moving there.

Re: big trip.
I agree with DBLSPRT68. I would drive that thing anywhere and everywhere around town to see how it does(including freeway jaunts) before undertaking a trip that long.

Re: big trip.
Definitely drive it around town and then to El Paso and return. You need to determine clutch serviceability. If the rear main is leaking, usually a long sleep will drip oil on the clutch surface and once it's hot....it's slip....slip....sliding away.

Re: big trip.
Actually I take my vote back I think with a change and check of fluids you will be alright . Appearences arent everything it does sound pretty sound. atleast its a manual you can push start it if need be.

Re: big trip.
I agree with all the others. check your fluids. Run it a bit around town. Make sure it's not overheating. And of course bring some extra fluids with you just in case. Like a couple courts of oil. some antifreeze and a couple jugs of water.

Re: big trip.
sounds like fun. i agree with most of the others, change the fluids and bring some extra just incase you need them. but just incase i would bring a good pair of walking shoes there isnt much between those two towns.

Re: big trip.
I'd also make sure the gas tank is free of debris and such. I can't imagine what must be floating around in there for the past 15 years!
