1990 corvette 6 speed manual tranny ???????
anyone here have any experience with one of these?? Good/Bad??
are they electronic (do i have to have a computer system on the truck for it to work)?? Will it fit on a 63 frame without any modifications to the fram or cab floorpan?? What would one be worth if it is supposedly working when removed from the car??

Re: 1990 corvette 6 speed manual tranny ???????
I happen to own a 90 Corvette. It has just over 100,000. No problems with the tranny that I know of. As far as I know, the only computer related component is the skip shift, which can be easily disabled by unplugging it. They make a skip skift eliminator kit, but its just a plastic piece that caps off the electrical plug.
I think the biggest problem would be figuring out how to move the shifter close towards the front of the truck so its not all the way back behind the seat. Since the tranny is so long. LOL

Re: 1990 corvette 6 speed manual tranny ???????
Is that the ZF unit? If yes, it is good until it breaks, and then it is almost worthless. If it ever needs repair, parts for it are impossibly expensive.
A used one would be worth about the same as a used T56 (say $1000-ish) only if: 1. You get a money-back guarantee signed in blood that it is good at the time of sale. 2. You don't plan to ever do anything that might break it. It doesn't require a computer in order to work, and it should fit in your 63, but the shifter is too far back for a bench seat. Now what is the story on why it is for sale, and how much is the seller asking? Ray Last edited by raycow; 07-07-2010 at 02:32 PM. |

Splehigh, does your Corvette actually have a T56? If yes, then I was wrong, and ranger should ignore what I said. I honestly thought the T56 didn't come along until a couple of years later.

Actually you were right Ray. It is a ZF. After doing some research, ZF was 89-96 and the T-56 was 97-02 for the corvette. The T-56 for Camaros was 93-02.

i knew it had the long tail, so it may not work with my bench seat. Just trying to find a manual tranny. figured if i could find a five or six speed it could be better on gas than than a 4 speed may just have to go with a muncie 4 speed

Re: 1990 corvette 6 speed manual tranny ???????
If your engine is an I6 get yourself a T5, world class would be nice. If you have a V8, get a Tremec or an old ford 3550 and change out the input shaft and enlarge the holes that mount the transmission to the bell housing. You could probably do a 4 speed too .. But I don't think you want that. I blew up my T5 twice behind a mild street V8, then went TKO500.

Re: 1990 corvette 6 speed manual tranny ???????
very true post. they have a little bit taller 6th overdrive than a T56 also. it's nice being able to run a 4.11 or 4.56 and still get great mileage tho.
