Bad bad news

I need to no what's wrong with my truck. its a 71 chevy with a 305 in it and I'm pretty soon it is the original tranny. So here's what happened I was driving my truck and at 60 it started making this really loud squealy nosie. So I pulled over as soon as I could I got out looked at everything I thought it was the pully. The pully looked fine as did everything else. So I got in it and put it in gear and it was like the tranny didn't want to pull the truck into a roll so I gave it a bit more gas and it moved. After it started moving the tranny did fine no nosies or drag I only went like 20 tho. Idk what's wrong with it is the tranny going out? Can it be saved? Or do I have to buy a new one? Also the truck was sitting for 5 years I got it running a few months ago and I drive it as much as possable it has made this nosie a few times but I thought it was just the pully. Its running great has no problems with all trips or anything its just that nosie and now the tranny. I need to know what's wrong I have been working all summer to drive this truck my senior year it starts in 2 weeks. Sorry for long post I'm just really weird my truck is messed up I love this truck its my baby lol plz help.

Re: Bad bad news

I don't know about the brakes. I was thinking it was the tranny but it could be the breaks now that I think about it how do I check to c if the breaks are locked up. I was going 20 cuz I wanted to I was worried it would hurt it more and it could of done more but I didn't want to push it.

Re: Bad bad news

Are the brakes locking up on it? Was you only going 20 because you wanted to or is that all your truck would do?

Re: Bad bad news

you can learn a lot about your AT by checking the fluid. Check the color and smell it.

Crawl under the truck and start at the transmission. Look about half way don the driveshaft. It will be supported in a frame crossmember and turn in a bearing. This is the carrier bearing. They can dry up, get hot and go bad. If you grab the driveshaft and can move it around, you KNOW you need a new bearing. If it is still tight, you might still need a new bearing......the big thing is finding out where the noise is coming from.

Re: Bad bad news

if its not belt/pulley related...

does this truck have an a/c compressor? if so...the clutch may be squealing?

or...could it be a squealer on the front disc brakes? If it starts squealing, can you put light pressure on the brakes and make the noise stop?

Re: Bad bad news

I had a similar problem and it turned out one of my belts was old and not tight enough. If I remember right it was the power steering belt.

Re: Bad bad news

You indicate that when you restarted it and attempted to go it didn't seem to want to roll. If you had to give it more gas than usual to get it moving and it was squealing when you were driving it, I would first start by checking to see if brakes are hung up in the rear. Did you recently try out your emergency brake?

i have used the e-brake before but not that day the e-brake hasnt given me problems before. How do i check to see if the brakes are hung up. Also the carrier bearing is out i think i can move it by hand and it moves a whole whole lot!

Re: Bad bad news

If you can rev the engine with it in park and it makes the squeal then it's not brakes, carrier bearing, etc. Try loosening the alternator belt and crank it to see if it still does it. No? Then the ps belt. That will eliminate those 2.
Is it maybe a whine instead of a squeal? Could be a torque convert or front pump failing in the tranny or just the tranny filter stopped up starving the pump of fluid. More testing is needed to narrow it down.
