Rusted gas tank? Replace or pour in liquid liner

Just bought a 67 GMC. Pulled the tank, nothing but rust inside. Should I replace it ($150 new), or try pouring the liquid liner stuff inside to coat it? Anyone have any luck with the liquid liner?? OH, it's about $25 a can. Thanks.

Just save the hassle and buy a new tank.... my 2 cents...

or go with a rear fuel tank from vendors like DaveBoyd cost you about $350 or so...

Yeah, you are probably right. I've been thinking just get the new tank and sending unit and call it good. Just trying to save a little money...but like you said, peace of mind is worth the extra money...

Get a new tank, cheaper in the long run. Or you can get a 73 and up Blazer tank and put it under the bed.

If you do decide to go with cleaning the tank and sealing the inside I would suggest master series I have personally had good luck with their products and Chuck is a really good guy to deal with

Lots of folks here swapping to fuel cells = lots of gas tanks sitting about. I'm sure some one would part with theirs for less than $150.

Make sure you check the site rules regarding buying and selling here (and no I don't have one for sale).

X2! There are good parts in your area. Become a member and post a WTB in the parts section. I'm sure you will what you need.

you have to completely clean a tank and remove all rust and debris to line it. Just dumping in the liner will result in a horrid mess.

I would agree. The write up from master series site
"ROTTEN GAS TANKS. Thoroughly CLEAN tank with RUST REMOVERS. Etching solutions to remove rust and treat the galvanized metal. RINSE with water inside and out and let THOROUGHLY DRY. Paint 2 coats of silver on the outside of the tank, pour the remainder of the can on the inside and slosh it around. Pour MCU back to can, replace lid. Apply second coat 4 hours later. Stand tank on end letting it DRAIN COMPLETELY. LET CURE 48 HOURS BEFORE USE. THIN COATS are recommended. DO NOT ALLOW COATING TO PUDDLE."

It would be easier, and in the long run, more cost effective to get a new tank in my personal opinion

Re: Rusted gas tank? Replace or pour in liquid liner

you can start by cleaning the original and seeing what you actually have// i've cleaned many tanks and put back into service without sealing them and had many years of service out of them//i powerwas first then use muriatc acid(swimming pool supplies at lowes) to clean rust followed by a powerwash rince

the monkey see monkey do blazer tank conversion is all the rage tho

Re: Rusted gas tank? Replace or pour in liquid liner

Well, if your set on keepin the tank, you can always reline it. I used t the POR15 on the gas tank of my 71 280sl after sitting 15 years and it turned out great. It uses metal etchers and cleaners to get rid of all the rust and varnish before you put the liner down. Just make sure you blow out your vent lines before it dries though (learned that the hard way). You can also replace it because there is nothing to it, even if you do a rear gas tank conversion. You can do a Blazer tank, but you have to cut a hole in your bed, or do what I did and did a 69 camaro tank conversion and have the filler come out behind a flip down license plate. All depends on what you want to do.

Re: Rusted gas tank? Replace or pour in liquid liner

You could take it to a rad repair shop. They have all the toys to clean and reline your original tank. They can even fix any holes you may have.
I went this route about 6 years ago, cost (+/-) $100.

YMMV.....don t. ....

Re: Rusted gas tank? Replace or pour in liquid liner

do it yourself cheap fix..fill tank with hot water..well warm at least,2 cans of crystal drano...and leave set for 1 hour, then slosh it around..dump out, rince with cold water, then take some paint thinner and rince it out with that...so it will get all the water out.. I do this to ones that have been sitting and have for years, with no problems, you just need to be carefull not to get it on your hands..

also cleans out old copper/brass radiators very good too.

79 ford truck, had coolant leak, old fellow put pepper seeds in to fix it,well it stopped up the rad, blew head gasket...I did the drano thing on it,and it cleaned it out, just like a new rad...Man it works..

Also, you can put like vavle covers and engine bracket in warm water, add it and it will take paint and grease off..in no time..you have a bare metal part..

Saw it on The old shadetree mechanic show when it 1st came on tv..

Re: Rusted gas tank? Replace or pour in liquid liner

I just used por-15 kit to reline my auxiliary tank. It takes a few hours to run everything through to prep and seal. Looks like it did a good job will have to wait and see how long it lasts. The kit was 65.00

Re: Rusted gas tank? Replace or pour in liquid liner

To bad your not closer. I have a really nice tank from a '71 cab that is complete with sending unit. Would take $50 for the complete set up but KC to Wichita is rather long road trip for a gas tank.
